It is most convenient if you have your student card right from the start of the educational year. It is best to apply for the card as soon as you know what is your address is in the Netherlands.

Study materials

Both on and off campus you will use your computer a lot. For some specific activities we have so-called innovationlabs: Gameslab, Securitylab, Accenturelab, Multimedia kitchen and Virtual Reality lab. You can work there with advanced, state of the art technology. Besides that, every student is obliged to have and to use their own laptop. We made sure we have:

  • A lot of power sockets to plug in your laptop;
  • Most of the needed software applications, available for free through surfspot.nl (see information below);
  • Many network connections so you can use a network cable for fast internet connection;
  • Wireless internet throughout the whole building.

Laptop requirements

At the beginning of the course, the most recent laptop is sufficient. So if you already own a laptop, you can probably just use it. If you don't have a laptop yet, take a quick look below. However, it is possible that a heavier laptop may become necessary during the course of the programme. This depends on your profile and/or specialisation, which you will follow in the main phase (from year 2). We do not recommend laptops, intended for online use, such as Chromebook or MacBook air, because they do not have enough hard disk space or cannot run the appropriate software.

Operating system

Keep in mind that Apple's new M1 processor cannot yet run all the necessary software and future support for it is still unknown. In fact, you are going to have to run a virtual machine at the beginning of your training and support for this is still limited. We recommend Windows 10 (or newer) as an operating system, which will run most of the software you will need during your training. However, you can also run Linux or Mac OS, you will probably run into some problems or virtualisation or installation of Windows may be necessary.

Below are the minimum requirements for your laptop.

Windows 10

  • Processor: Intel Core i5 / AMD Ryzen 5
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Hard disk space: 128 GB Disk space
  • Graphics hardware: Min. 128 MB of graphics memory
  • Number of USB ports: 2
  • Display: Screen resolution of 1280 x 768
  • Display: 14 inches
  • Browser: Most recent version of Edge, Chrome or Firefox

MacOS

  • Processor: Intel processor
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Hard disk space: 128 GB disk space
  • Graphics hardware: Min. 128 MB graphics memory
  • Number of USB ports: 2
  • Display: Screen resolution of 1280 x 800
  • Display: 14 inches
  • Browser: Most recent version of Safari, Chrome or Firefox

Video card

A dedicated video card may come in handy, or even necessary, at a later stage of the programme. For the ICT & Media Design profile and the ICT & Game Design and Technology specialisation, these cards are highly recommended, as this may involve running some heavier graphics programmes such as Maya, Blender or Unity. For example, Blender recommends a video card with at least 4 GB of VRAM and 16 GB of system memory (RAM). Should you buy a laptop with only usb C connections, always buy a hub with at least 1 usb A port (preferably 4 or more) and 1 HDMI connection.

Additional costs

It is possible that you will need some small computer supplies or hardware after you started your study programme. Most of the time, this will only be a small amount of money.

Software deals for education

SURFspot is the ultimate non-profit ICT online store. SURFspot offers an educational discount on software, hardware and online educational resources.

So how does it work?
Go to SURFspot.nl and log in using your Fontys account (PCN@student.fontys.nl + password)

Surfspot

All Fontys students are entitled to the Office 365 package. You can use the online version. But you can also download the package on your various devices such as your laptop and smartphone.
We strongly advise you to make use of the Office 365 package. You can read exactly what to do in the manual we have posted on the Fontysportal. Use the login details you received from us immediately after your registration with Studielink to access the portal (see also: My personal login, e-mail and wifi).

Ambience photo Fontys

Why Office 365?

  • Secure storage for your Fontys study materials.
  • If you have an internet connection, you can access your stuff.
  • You can access it with any device, as long as it has a browser on board.
  • Your OneDrive is 1 TB in size, and provides synchronisation software for your private laptop or desktop.
  • Legally and freely install the latest Office version on up to 10 devices.
  • Almost every part of Office365 has a separate app, just search your mobile device's store.
  • You can use this cloud environment as long as you study here.

Because most information is available digitally, you don't need books for the first semester.

Hi everyone!

My name is Adelina, but everyone calls me Adi — I'm 20 years old, originally from Sofia, Bulgaria, and currently studying Full Stack Development at Fontys ICT. I'm finishing up my 4th semester and will soon be heading into my 5th semester internship!

I've been part of the Intro Committee for a year now, and after leading a very successful February intro, I'm back and more motivated than ever as your Intro Committee Leader, making sure everything runs smoothly so you have the best possible start to your student life. I also served as Treasurer for the 2025/2026 school year, so trust me when I say I know how to keep things organised! I'm a bit of a nerd at heart with a wide range of interests, so don't be afraid to come talk to me — chances are we'll find something in common.

I'm also a member of Proxy, the study association of Fontys ICT, a vibrant student community that organises fun and meaningful activities throughout the semester and is the perfect place to meet new people and make the most of your student life.

We've been working incredibly hard to make this intro week one to remember, and I cannot wait to meet you all at the end of August!

Get familiar with life at Fontys during A Day at Fontys as a Student. This activity helps you prepare for your first weeks of study and gives you clear and useful information to start with confidence.

Members of the study association Proxy will explain the most important practical topics you need to know as a student at Fontys. This session focuses on the basics and helps you feel more at home before classes begin.

After the introduction, we will take you on a guided tour of the R10 building. You will explore the four‑floor building together and see important locations such as the café, vending machines and lifts. You will also visit special facilities like the video lab and sound lab, which are used for media and production activities.
