Insurance
Besides health insurance, it is strongly recommended to have:
- Third-party liability insurance (in case you accidentally damage something or hurt someone)
- Repatriation insurance (to cover costs if you need to return to your home country for medical reasons)
Recommended insurance
Fontys recommends the international student-friendly insurance company InsureToStudy. They offer complete insurance packages that cover:
- Health care
- Extraordinary costs
- Repatriation
- Liability
- Accidents
- Legal aid
- Baggage and household goods
- Online consultations with a digital doctor
Plans
You can choose between two plans:
- Master Plan – covers health care, but not existing conditions.
- Master Plan+ – also covers existing medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes or eczema.
Apply through InsureToStudy and use the institution code FONTYSITS to receive your Fontys discount. Make sure to use your student.fontys.nl email address when registering.
Go to InsureToStudyFor EU/EEA students
If you are from an EU or EEA country and do not need a residence permit, you can choose your own insurance company.
However, please note: An EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) is not enough. It only gives limited cover and is usually valid for a short time.
For non-EU/EEA students
If you need an entry visa and/or residence permit, Fontys will arrange your insurance as part of the immigration process.
All non-EU/EEA students are insured through InsureToStudy with the Master Plan+, which also covers existing medical conditions.
After the insurance is arranged, InsureToStudy will contact you directly about the payment of the premium.
You must stay insured for your entire stay in the Netherlands, but you can extend or change your insurance after your first year if you wish.
Combining study and work
If you are following a part-time study and also work, you may need to combine two types of insurance:
- InsureToStudy (student insurance)
- HollandZorg (basic Dutch health insurance)
This combination makes it easy to switch between working and not working — even daily. Contact InsureToStudy for more information about this combination.

Important to know
- If you are in the Netherlands only to study, you cannot take out a public Dutch health insurance.
- Fontys University of Applied Sciences cannot be held responsible if you do not have proper insurance. It is your own responsibility to make sure you have the right insurance before or during your stay in the Netherlands.
Quick answers
Yes. Health insurance is required by law for all students who live in the Netherlands (EU/EEA and non-EU/EEA).
No. An EHIC only gives limited, short-term cover. You still need student health insurance during your stay.
Before you arrive in the Netherlands.
- EU/EEA students: arrange it yourself before your start date
- Non-EU/EEA students: Fontys arranges it during the visa/residence process.
If your residence permit purpose is “Study”, you may need to combine InsureToStudy with Dutch basic health insurance (HollandZorg). Ask InsureToStudy to set this up.
