Three fields. One broad degree.

Applied Science — Chemistry & Chemical Engineering brings together biology, chemistry and technology. Not as separate subjects, but as a toolkit. You decide how you use it. Whether you work on new medicines, sustainable materials, clean water or medical diagnostics.Prefer to follow this programme in Dutch? See Applied Science (Dutch). If you follow the Dutch programme, you can also choose to take one or more modules in English.

Is the programme Applied Science right for you?

Student Applied Science - Chemistry & Chemical Engineering

I chose Applied Science because I wanted a programme that combines scientific theory with real practical experience. What really attracted me to Chemistry and Chemical Engineering was that you don't just study from a textbook, you take what you learn straight into the lab and see it come to life.

The best part of the programme is that we spend a lot of time working on experiments and projects that reflect situations you'll actually encounter in industry. One of the highlights for me has been analysing polymers and testing their physical properties. Because the classes are small, the practical sessions feel like working in a real laboratory. If something doesn't go as planned, you can discuss it with your lecturers and work together to solve the problem.

During the programme, I've developed practical laboratory skills, learned to work with professional equipment, and improved my problem-solving and teamwork skills. Those experiences have given me much more confidence for my future career.

I don't know exactly which direction I want to in the future take yet, but that's one of the things I like most about this programme. We explore different fields, from chemistry to chemical engineering and materials, which helps me discover what interests me most before choosing a master's programme.

If you’re unsure what you want to study, my best advice is to think about how you prefer to learn. If the idea of just sitting in massive lecture halls memorizing endless textbook theory sounds overwhelming, don't worry, that’s not what it’s like here.

You get a supportive environment with small-scale classrooms where you can actually get your questions answered, and you immediately get to see that theory come to life in the lab. It is a commitment and the work is real, but because it’s so hands-on and career-oriented, you always know exactly why you are learning what you're learning. If you want your education to feel relevant to your future career from day one, just go for it!

You have a lot of freedom to focus on what you find interesting, and you’ll learn research skills that can be applied directly in practice.

What I enjoy most about the programme is the practicals. I've learned a wide range of lab work techniques, from keeping cell cultures alive and running gel electrophoresis to synthesising different medicines. Working on practicals and projects has helped me build both my knowledge and my confidence in the lab.

The teachers are nice and supportive and always willing to help, which creates a great learning environment. If you have questions, there's always someone who takes the time to explain things.

After graduating, I would like to continue doing research in a company or pursue a master's degree in a field that really interests me. I would recommend this programme to anyone who is curious about chemistry and biology and wants to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical lab skills.

What I like most about this study programme is the mix of theory and practical work. In the lessons, you learn how things work, and then you get to put that knowledge into practice in the lab. I really like that combination because it keeps the course interesting and varied.

One of the most important things I’ve learned during the course is how to work on projects. You work together with other students and learn how to organise and complete a project from start to finish.

After I finish this study programme, I’d like to work in the pharmaceutical industry, where I hope to be involved in laboratory research.

I’d definitely recommend this course to anyone who’s interested in chemistry, microbiology and technology, and who enjoys both the practical and theoretical side of things.

Your programme

Learn to analyse, discover and build

Applied Science is a degree for students who want to explore and keep surprising themselves. You start with a broad foundation in biology, chemistry and technology. Then you choose three theme modules that suit you, from developing tomorrow's medicines to solving water challenges or creating new materials. Step by step, you build a profile that is truly your own.

Your programme

What are you going to learn?

  • You learn to reason across three fields: biology, chemistry and technology.

That combination makes you versatile. You spot connections others miss.

  • You combine chemistry, biology and technology into your own specialisation.

This allows you to move more easily between different fields and sectors. From chemical technology and diagnostics to life sciences.

  • You discover where your interest lies; biological, chemical or technological.

And specialise step by step in the direction that suits you. Want to focus on biomedical applications? From the end of your first year, you can choose the specialisation Biomedical Engineering.

Your programme

What will the next 4 years look like?

You start with a broad foundation in biology, chemistry and technology. In years 1 and 2, you choose three theme modules that suit you. In year 3, you use your elective space: you follow a minor, do an internship or start a pre-master's. You also conduct in-depth research through an expert module. You finish with a 10-month final-year project.

Your future

Your direction, your future

With a degree in Applied Science, you are well positioned in the job market. Companies such as Philips Healthcare, MSD, BASF and Rockwool, as well as hospitals like the Catharina Hospital and the Princess Máxima Centre, are looking for professionals who can bridge multiple fields. That's you. You can also continue to a master's degree after completing your bachelor's.
