The Choreography programme taught me to get as close as possible to my artistic core. To do so, I felt I had to unlearn many things and test many more ideas and concepts.The programme ensured that I could get new input and knowledge from different assignments and teachers. It is difficult to ‘learn’ how to become a choreographer, the study programme offers the space and safety to discover your own artistic core and in that process there is plenty of room to try, fail and try again.

During my training, I discovered my love for dance. I was also given the space to develop my own artistic voice.The broad education gave me a strong foundation while allowing me to delve into my own fascinations. For me, that was the Martha Graham technique. Already during my studies, I travelled to New York to experience this style up close. After graduating, I decided to stay there and got the chance to dance with the Martha Graham Second Company. My dedication was rewarded with the Armgard von Bardeleben Award for Excellence in Graham Technique.I now work as a professional dancer with various companies and teach the Graham technique here in New York.

Dance is more than a profession for me, it is a way to tell stories, share emotions and constantly reinvent myself.

I started my dance education at Fontys, specializing in Contemporary Urban. Despite graduating during the Covid-19 pandemic, which disrupted my plans, I shifted focus to teaching and exploring other interests. I later studied Psychology at Tilburg University and pursued a Master's in Dance Movement Therapy at Codarts Rotterdam, combining my passions for dance and psychology.

Throughout my studies, I continued teaching and joined the collective 'vloeistof' in Tilburg. I also developed a course called Stress Release via Dans, aimed at helping people connect with their bodies and release emotions through guided exercises.Additionally, I work at a creative daycare and after-school program, enjoying my time with children.

Studying at Fontys challenged me in many meaningful ways. The Contemporary Urban programme exposed me to multiple dance styles, which constantly pushed me to grow, adapt, and explore new movement languages. Working with guest teachers added an extra layer of challenge and inspiration, encouraging me to step outside my comfort zone and expand my artistic vocabulary.

The teachers played a crucial role in this process. Their high expectations and commitment to excellence motivated me to show up every day and give my all. Their guidance encouraged me not only to refine my technique, but also to develop my own artistic voice.

Because of this environment, I’ve grown significantly as an artist. I dared to try new things, explored what kind of dancer I wanted to be, and learned to shape my own style. The programme allowed me the space to discover my direction and identity as a dancer.

The atmosphere within the academy was warm and supportive. My classmates and I formed close bonds because we shared the same physical and mental challenges. That sense of community created a safe and inspiring space to learn and grow together.

Being part of an institute that hosts multiple art forms was another highlight of my time at Fontys. It allowed me to meet artists from other disciplines, collaborate across programmes, and build connections that lasted even beyond graduation. Being surrounded by a diverse creative community opened my eyes to other forms of expression, expanded my network, and inspired me.
