Voice and speech
During a speech and language therapy assessment, we assess your speech and voice abilities.
We can also assess your speech fluency, speech rate and speech intelligibility, and determine the best way for you to work on these areas.
Based on this assessment, we establish a baseline, so to speak, which enables us to identify, amongst other things, the following:.
- the dynamic range of the voice (the range of your voice)
- vowel and consonant formation (articulation)
- articulation rate
- assess intelligibility
- breath-voice connection (breath support)
- vocal vitality (how fit is your voice?)
- a questionnaire about how you experience your voice
- breathing pattern (this assesses whether your breathing is interfering with your speech. After all, there needs to be a good connection between your breathing and your voice if you are to use your voice properly and safely)
- voice characteristics & voice quality
If this is one of the areas where you need help, we will work with students to assess your voice and articulation. We offer a short-term programme to help you get started on working on this. Should more intensive treatment be required, we will refer you to a specialist. .
