  •   Rembrandt Piano Trio

    Ambience photo Fontys

Rembrandt’s remarkable mastery of the interplay between light and dark, with frequent use of sharp contrast – chiaroscuro – to draw the observer into the spectacle, resulted in lively scenes filled with drama that never fail to move the viewer. Completely in keeping with the painter’s style, the Rembrandt Piano Trio – formed in 2016 by violinist Adelina Hasani, cellist Paul Uyterlinde, and pianist Fali Pavri – presents the abundantly rich classical, romantic, and 20th-century piano trio repertoire in a harmonious collaboration brimming with passion, thrilling their audiences in the process.

The three players share a deep-rooted, abiding love of chamber music while fulfilling their various careers as soloist, university professor, and orchestral musician.

In addition to recitals that often feature programmatic themes and spoken narration, family concerts turn up on the roster, with Edwin Rutten, for example, enacting Yehudi Menuhin’s fairy tale, “The King, the Cat, and the Violin”; the Rembrandt Piano Trio also develops unusual projects such as programs inspired by exhibitions in Amsterdam’s Hermitage Museum.

The trio’s work with contemporary composers provides yet another type of intriguing program that is ultimately a valuable journey of discovery for the performers and audience alike.

  •   Curriculum

The core components of the program are ensemble coaching, individual lessons and being embedded with the ensemble.

    Ensemble coaching

You will intensive lessons with the ensemble you are working with. This gives your ensemble the opportunity to further develop your ensemble at a professional level.

    Individual lessons

Your ensemble benefits from individual members that are continually learning, innovating, and improving their instrumental skills. To this end, all students also follow individual lessons, using the facilities of Fontys.

    Embedded with the ensemble

As a group, you will be embedded with the ensemble in residence. You can visit concerts of the ensemble, interact with organizers of the ensemble’s concerts, and visit the ensemble when recording in the studio. The program gives young ensembles the chance to work in unusual places and work with the ensemble in residence in authentic environment.

    •     Euphonium

      Professor

      Robbert Vos

      About the course

Are you interested in studying Euphonium? AMPA offers a specific course for this beautiful instrument! After all, there’s a reason why it is deemed the cello of brass instruments. Although the instrument is relatively new and often even unknown, there is a world of opportunities. Are you dreaming of a career as a soloist? An orchestral musician? An ensemble specialist? A teacher? Anything is possible!

You will be trained to become a professional on your instrument with the highest possible musical and technical capabilities. The euphonium is an extremely versatile instrument, so there will be much attention towards the diverse stylistic possibilities. This includes studying the most famous and canonical repertoire for the instrument, but also more uncommon music to make you a well-rounded musician, who can adapt style, sound, articulation and musical approach to what is necessary or required in daily practice.

Playing together with other musicians is an integral part of your studies. You will be part of the brass department, but we would also challenge you to think outside the box. Which surprising ensemble combinations can you think of? Perhaps a combination with woodwinds? Percussion? String players? Or would you like to perform alongside other artistic mediums like dance, theatre, or fine arts? It’s all possible and we can offer you the chance to create and develop your own ideas. This will help you to become an independent musician.

In the Bachelor Course you will have weekly lessons with your euphonium teacher (Robbert Vos), a weekly ensemble coaching lesson, and a rehearsal with a pianist to work on repertoire. Of course, this is combined with interesting courses on music theory, cultural history, entrepreneurship and much more.

In the Master’s Course, AMPA gives you the opportunity to shape your own educational plan. Do you want to focus on any specific subjects? Or would you like to specialise in teaching, solo playing or ensemble performance? It’s up to you!

We hope to welcome you to our brand new euphonium class!

      About this main subject

In the past twenty years the profession of classical percussion changed dramatically. Where previously the classical percussionist was trained to contribute his or her part in the symphony orchestra, nowadays they find their employ in a far broader line of work. Percussionists perform in theatre, chamber music or percussion ensembles, they initiate collaborations with other artists like choreographers, visual artists or DJ’s, or they specialize in playing styles like Japanese or African percussion or Gamelan. Many percussionists start their own groups and find their place in performing arts in this way.

The first two years at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA/bachelor) we will be focusing on establishing a strong technical and musical fundament, based on solo and chamber music repertoire. These two years are also meant as a period of orientation and research in the world of performing arts, in order to explore and discover the main interest of each student. From the third year on we will work on the development of personal taste and style, based on the student’s main interest, which eventually can result in a study at our Master of Music. In this program the student will get the opportunity to further facilitate his/her study into a career.

      About the saxophone class

The Fontys Academy of Music and Performing Arts (AMPA) in Tilburg, hosts one of the largest international saxophone classes in Europe. It focusses on: finding the individual voice of the student; working on a solid basis in technique and music for performances; learning how to act in professional environment; playing lots of chamber music (including a 25 piece saxophone orchestra!); looking for different influences through international masterclasses by saxophone players and other instrumentalists.

The saxophone teachers at AMPA, both operating from different perspectives, but unified in their love for the instrument, consider the saxophone world to be the fore-runner in classical music and convey this in every way to their students.

A large number of successful and active alumni from the saxophone class, all operating from their own vision, underline the strength of this concept.

      • Creator Performer

        General Information

Over the past century in classical music, there has been a separation between composer and musician, creator and performer. At the same time, in recent years there has been a movement within the performance arts in which the creator is also a performer, concept developer and researcher.

Creator Performer aims to be at the forefront of these new interdisciplinary developments. With this new master's program, we look first and foremost at you as a creative performer.

Whether you are a musician who wants to make theater, a composer who wants to perform, or a choreographer who wants to compose: together we will find a path that suits you and in which you develop your dreams and talents.

With its many art disciplines, Fontys has a lot of expertise in house. We have tutors who have won their spurs in the field and who know exactly what you need. But we also work with various artists, ensembles and institutions in the field. So you can be sure that you are up to date with the latest developments.

Fontys Master of Music is a small academy with a far-reaching renewal of the educational path. Because of the small scale, we can optimally support you as a student in your individual development. Your goals determine the course of your studies.

A unique feature of Fontys  Master of Music is that you only have to take one third of your classes indoors (you can always take more, of course). We give you a lot of freedom, but in return we expect you to be able to work in a disciplined way.

Every year you receive a budget that you can spend with external teachers. Whether that is at another art institute or with an artist from whom you want to learn the tricks of the trade.

Tilburg is not exactly in the Randstad, but we think it is a perfect location where you can concentrate on your work, far away from the hustle and bustle. That does not mean that nothing happens. Brabant (of which Tilburg is a part) has become an arts and culture hub in recent years. It is a place where a lot is possible and where you can still do a lot of pioneering. Just take a look at the Spoorzone, the LocHal or Dock Zuid.

        Audition

        • Before the audition, you will be asked to submit a Personal Development Plan (pdp), in which you outline your creator performer plans for the upcoming years.
        • You will also have to hand in a portfolio that shows experience in co-creating, connecting and working interdisciplinary. This portfolio should also contain work that shows your ability as creator. (b.a. performance, improvising, composing, or writing abilities).
        • At the audition (±30 minutes in total) the candidate shows a small sample of the above and performs a piece of music of her own choice. After the audition there will be an interview to discuss the PDP.
