Network and affiliated research groups
Innovation rarely happens alone. The Centre of Expertise High Tech Systems & Materials (HTSM) brings together Fontys research groups, companies, government bodies and knowledge institutions in a network that goes beyond a single project. Aimed at programmatic collaboration, shared knowledge and long-term impact in the Brainport region, Tilburg and Noord-Limburg. Depending on the question, we bring together the right expertise, people and networks. Focused on applicable innovation and societal impact.
Our research groups
Within HTSM, several research groups (lectoraten in Dutch) from different Fontys institutes work closely together. Each research group brings its own expertise in key enabling technologies, such as systems engineering, robotics, digital technology, sensors, quantum and photonics, energy storage and the application of materials. By combining this knowledge, we create a strong, multidisciplinary foundation for our research programmes within the three societal themes: Sustainable Manufacturing, Energy Transition and Healthcare (MedTech). This collaboration allows us to approach complex challenges from different angles and develop solutions that are both substantively strong and practically applicable.
Our lectoraten (research groups):
- carry out practice-oriented research in collaboration with industry partners
- actively involve students and educational programmes in projects
- contribute to knowledge development, innovation and talent development
This overview shows how we connect research groups and expertise around our societal themes.

Our network
In addition to the research groups, COE HTSM works with a broad network of partners, including:
- high-tech and manufacturing companies
- healthcare organisations and hospitals
- government bodies and regional development agencies
- knowledge institutions and other universities of applied sciences
These collaborations arise from concrete questions in practice and often grow into long-term projects, programmes or consortia. The nature of the collaboration varies by theme and by partner: from project-based to strategic and multi-year.
Who we connect
COE HTSM plays an active connecting role. We bring together:
- practical questions from companies and organisations
- research capacity and expertise from research groups
- the talent and curiosity of students
- the knowledge and experience of public and private partners
By connecting these parties purposefully, collaborations emerge that go beyond a single project. In this way we accelerate innovation, strengthen networks and ensure that knowledge is genuinely applied in both practice and education.
