I was positively shocked by many things at the university; it was so different compared to the universities in Italy.

Beatrice

Student Bachelor ICT from Italy

Ciao! I'm a 3rd year student at Fontys, studying the bachelor ICT from Italy. My journey started in High School, where I really liked studying ICT at school and enjoyed making small projects in my free time. These experiences made me realise that I wanted a hands-on approach during university, where I would learn through practice rather than just theory. I heard about Fontys through my father, a journalist covering education throughout Europe, where I found their innovative approach and close connection to the industry – especially in the Brainport region, home to companies like Philips and ASML – to be very intriguing.

Fast-forward to September, I arrived at Fontys, and I was positively shocked by many things at the university; it was so different compared to the universities in Italy. ICT has no fixed path for every student, which makes sense as ICT is such a broad subject; every student can choose to study the topics that they find most interesting. In my case, this is Software Engineering and Artificial Intelligence. What stood out to me was the focus on practical learning over theory, having small classes, group work, and direct interaction with teachers. But what impressed me the most was that there are no traditional exams; we are graded through real-world projects, which I think makes much more sense in this industry. Also, unlike most courses in Italy, Fontys has no entry exams.

It was definitely not an easy choice to leave everyone I knew when starting this journey, but it was definitely worth it. Studying at Fontys has opened various opportunities for me, both personally and professionally, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds.

"The support and freedom we had at Fontys and through SPARC Innovation helped us take the first steps, test assumptions, and eventually turn the project into a business.”

Martin & Simeon

Bachelor ICT graduates, co-owners of Synthgen

Studying at Fontys gave us the space to experiment, fail fast, and build things that felt meaningful rather than purely theoretical. Many of the courses pushed us to approach problems like engineers who ship solutions, not students who only deliver assignments. We also drew a lot of inspiration from the startup culture in Eindhoven, the founders we met at TQ, and the worldwide community of indie hackers and online entrepreneurs who openly shared their progress and failures. That mix shaped how we think and how we build.Synthgen started as a small idea during our studies. We saw how companies struggled with slow data preparation, heavy manual annotation, and scarce data domains, so we set out to automate that pain point. What began as a side project quickly grew into a real product with real users and partnerships. The support and freedom we had at Fontys and through SPARC Innovation helped us take the first steps, test assumptions, and eventually turn the project into a business.Building Synthgen together has been exciting and surprisingly natural. It’s not our first attempt at creating a startup, so we bring lessons from earlier tries as well. Our studies gave us the technical foundation and the confidence to explore and build something of our own. Looking back, Fontys did more than teach us how to code. It encouraged us to build, collaborate, and think like founders."

Frequently asked questions

The main difference is that the bachelor in ICT is broader and offers many different study programmes, while the Bachelor's programme in Information Technology focuses more on the in-depth technical aspects of software engineering, such as building software and systems. Compare the content of both programmes and choose the one that best suits you and your preferences.

As a starter, you will earn between €3,000 and €3,800 gross per month on average, but this can vary greatly depending on the position, experience and sector. With a few years of experience, this salary can rise to €55,000 to €75,000 per year, and as a senior with more than seven years of experience, it can even be €75,000 to €100,000 per year. Specialist positions such as Ethical Hacker or Cloud Architect can yield even higher salaries.

The Associate degree in Ad-ICT is a two-year programme designed to quickly prepare you for the job market. You can also progress to a Bachelor's degree in ICT. This is a four-year programme that offers in-depth theoretical and practical knowledge of ICT, including research methods. If you want to continue studying after that, you can move on to a Master's programme in ICT, such as the Master's Applied IT. This takes 1 to 1,5 years, depending on your study pace.

Some programming knowledge is a plus but not a requirement. Most of the students come here to learn and have no prior experience with development.Math is not required. It is needed only when you are interested in the programme Accelerated ICT & Software Engineering. In our Business, Infrastructure and Media topics there is no math at all, besides some basic statistics. Our Technology topic has math but it is taught in the major itself.

Any laptop will suffice at the start of the programme. It is possible that a more powerful laptop will be needed during the course of the programme. This depends on the choices you make from the second year onwards. We will advise you on this.
