Applied Physics

Your study programme

Get a good impression of what your study programme will look like.

What will you learn?

You will discover the fundamentals of physics through experimentation, collaboration, and learning both theoretically and practically. Through practicals, projects, and internships, you will develop the skills needed to create sustainable energy solutions or medical technologies.

  • A balanced mix of practical work, theory, group work, and self-study

  • Explore topics like heat, light, motion, and electricity

  • Attend courses such as differential calculus, atomic and nuclear physics and programming

What will the next 4 years look like?

Your program consists of a propedeutical -and a main phase. In your first year, you’ll learn essential skills and connect with companies. The three-year main phase focuses on skill development, practical experience, a free program and graduation.

Ideal week:

  • 20 hrs classes (theory & practice)
  • 10 hrs project work
  • 10 hrs self-study (partially guided).
year 1
Eindhoven

Propeduetical phase

Your first year of Applied Physics focuses on the fundamentals. Each semester, you will follow a central theme with the research cycle as the common thread. Within these themes, you will also take several mathematics and physics courses. Additionally, you will work on experiments and projects where you apply the knowledge you have gained in practical settings.

year 2
Eindhoven

Main phase

You build on the knowledge and skills gained in your first year while continuing to apply the research cycle. You will deepen your understanding through courses on 'waves in light and sound', 'smart materials', 'measurement and data processing', and 'transport physics'. You will also specialize further by selecting your own projects, primarily sourced from the business world and partially from our research group.

year 3
Eindhoven

Internship

Internship

In the first semester, you will complete an internship at a company or research institute, guided by a lecturer. Whether a large or small company, in the Netherlands or abroad, everything is possible. Together, we will find the best match.

Specialization

In the second semester, you will specialize in at least two areas of physics, such as photonics, solid-state physics, or data analysis, exploring topics that interest you.

year 4
Eindhoven

Graduation

Free program

During your free program, you can take a minor either at Fontys or at another (international) institution. You also have the option to do another internship or pursue a pre-master's program. The choice is yours.

Graduation

You will select a graduation project that aligns with your interests at a company, research institute, or hospital of your choice.

Student experiences

Ignacio

Student Applied Physics

I decided to study Applied Physics because I am fascinated by nuclear physics and would love to work in that field in the future. My goal is to work in hospital laboratories, using technologies such as particle accelerators to help treat cancer.

One of the things I enjoy most about the programme is the project-based way of learning. A project that really stood out for me was building a functioning multimeter. It was challenging, but I enjoyed working through the difficulties and finding solutions together with my fellow students.

The programme has also helped me develop my communication skills. Working closely with others has taught me that understanding a topic is important, but being able to explain it clearly is just as valuable.

I would recommend Applied Physics to people who are curious, creative and not afraid of a challenge. It is a broad programme that can lead to many different opportunities.

I chose this programme because physics has always been the subject that interested me most. I wanted to understand not only the theory, but also how physics is applied in real life. That's exactly what I've found here.

What I enjoy most is the combination of theory, practical lab experiments and project work. The teachers are supportive, the atmosphere is good and friendly, and you work closely together with other students. Before I started, I was used to working on my own, but this programme has shown me how important teamwork and good communication are when you're working on projects.

Two experiences really stand out to me. One was visiting an intern at Maastricht University, where we learned about the development of an underground Einstein Telescope. It was inspiring to see how such a large project brings together people from different disciplines to work towards one goal. Another memorable visit was to the computer museum during the electronics course, where we explored the history of computers and how technology has evolved over time.

The programme also helps you discover what kind of career suits you. Through visits to companies and internships, you get a better idea of the opportunities after graduation. And if you're not sure about your future plans, your study coach is always there to help you.

I would recommend this programme to anyone who enjoys physics and wants to see how it can be applied in practice. If you like experiments, projects and learning together with other students, you'll feel at home here.

Student Applied Physics

I’ve always enjoyed physics, so choosing this degree felt like a natural decision for me. What I enjoy most about the course are the projects and practical sessions. I really like sitting around a table with other students, analysing a problem and working together step by step to find a solution. I also enjoy working with others during practical sessions, learning from each other and sharing ideas.

My very first project was quite a challenge. I put more time and effort into it than I had ever put into a school project at secondary school. But this time, it felt different. Rather than seeing the project as something to dread, I actually enjoyed getting stuck into the subject, figuring things out and working towards a solution.

Throughout the course, I’ve not only gained a lot of new knowledge about physics, but I’ve also learnt how to work more effectively as part of a team. Working together on challenging and complex projects helps you develop skills that will be really valuable later on in your career.

My advice to anyone considering this degree? If you enjoy physics and aren’t afraid of putting in the effort, this could be a great course for you. Sign up for a taster day or a student experience day and see for yourself whether the course is right for you. Above all, choose the degree that you think you’ll enjoy the most.

I want to understand how things work and how I can apply that knowledge to solve problems. I’m a down-to-earth person, not someone who is abstract or theoretical. That’s why I prefer to work with concrete things, preferably with my hands.

When I discovered that physics is present in every aspect of life, it was an eye-opener. Studying physics would open doors to countless opportunities. Physics shapes many things around us, often without us even noticing.
