About this course

High-tech systems combine mechanics, electronics and IT. Mechanical checks alone are no longer enough. In 10 weeks you grow into a Mechatronical Test Engineer. You learn to run Factory Acceptance Tests, analyse faults in connected systems and make well-founded improvement proposals. You learn blended in a Smart Factory and apply theory straight to real-life cases.

Why Mechatronical Test Engineer?

  • From hands-on technician to test engineer

You validate and improve systems independently, based on data.

  • Learn in a real Smart Factory

You apply theory straight to realistic hands-on cases.

  • A recognised microcredential

Comparable to Associate Degree level; the route to the AD stays open.

  • More room to grow

You become more valuable to your team in high-tech production.

A good technician knows how to build something.

A good Test Engineer understands why it works, and why it sometimes does not. In this module we teach participants to really analyse system behaviour.

For who?

This course is for skilled technical professionals who want to grow with the changing high-tech industry. You recognise yourself as:

  • An experienced mechanic or assembly worker (MBO 3-4 working and thinking level)
  • Working in high-tech machine building or a cleanroom environment
  • Involved in testing, validation or internal acceptance (FAT)
  • Someone who increasingly deals with faults where mechanics, electronics and IT come together
  • A professional who wants to work more independently and escalate less often to Production Engineers

  • Mbo 3/4 working and thinking level
  • Experience as a mechanic (cleanroom level 2-3)
  • Basic knowledge of mechatronics

Content and structure

You learn in a realistic Smart Factory environment, where theory and practice are combined straight away. You work on real cases where systems, data and test procedures come together. What you learn, you apply directly in your own work. You learn to independently:

  • Prepare and run a Factory Acceptance Test (FAT)
  • Check the mechanical and digital integrity of modules
  • Calibrate and validate sensors and actuators
  • Analyse faults in connected systems
  • Collect, log and visualise data
  • Critically assess and improve work instructions
  • Substantiate improvement proposals towards engineering

The difference from a hands-on technician: you analyse, assess and improve processes based on data.

The module lasts 10 weeks and has a blended set-up:

  • 10 practical half-days in the Smart Factory
  • Online preparation via e-learning
  • Applying theory directly in hands-on cases
  • Building a portfolio with professional deliverables

You work on, among other things, a FAT case and a fault analysis in a connected system.

You learn in a Smart Factory set-up at Brainport Industries Campus or a comparable high-tech learning environment at Fontys. You work with:

  • Mechatronic modules
  • Networked systems
  • Data-analysis tools
  • Realistic test set-ups

For in-company participation, you learn at the company’s own location.

The course starts twice a year. Sessions are held in the morning, from 09.00 to 13.00. The next round starts in February 2027:

  • Day 1: 16 February 2027
  • Day 2: 23 February 2027
  • Day 3: 2 March 2027
  • Day 4: 9 March 2027
  • Day 5: 16 March 2027
  • Day 6: 23 March 2027
  • Day 7: 30 March 2027
  • Day 8: 7 April 2027
  • Day 9: 13 April 2027
  • Day 10: 20 April 2027

After successful completion you receive an official Fontys microcredential at NLQF level 5. NLQF 5 is comparable to the level of an Associate Degree (AD): a practice-oriented higher-education programme. You don’t just work to instruction; you independently analyse, assess and improve processes.
