This course is intended for professionals who already have work experience but do not (yet) hold a specific financial role, and who wish to gain an understanding of the figures and contribute to financial discussions within their organisation. The course is also suitable as a structured, reliable foundation in financial and management accounting for anyone who needs it.

There are no specific entry requirements.

No prior accounting knowledge is required for this course – just a willingness to delve into the subject matter and put it into practice. The course is taught in English.

Content and structure

Accounting Essentials for Business Professionals provides a practical foundation in financial and management accounting. You will learn how to read and prepare financial statements, analyse costs and use financial data to support business decisions. Theory and practice are combined, enabling you to apply the knowledge you have gained straight away.

The course lasts six weeks (one topic per week) and covers the two pillars of business accounting.

Financial accounting:

  • The balance sheet – assets, liabilities and equity
  • The profit and loss account – revenue, costs and profitability
  • The cash flow statement – operating, investing and financing activities

Management accounting:

  • Cost trends and break-even analysis
  • Full cost accounting – allocation of overheads
  • Marginal analysis – decisions based on contribution margin, including relevant costs and make-or-buy choices

The course follows the textbook ‘Accounting and Finance for Non-Specialists’ by Peter Atrill and Eddie McLaney (13th edition).

The course is a blended learning course: two live online sessions per week, supplemented by self-study and a range of interactive resources.

All lessons take place live via Microsoft Teams.

  • Weekly live lecture (60 minutes): the topic of the week is explained live via MS Teams
  • Weekly live workshop (60 minutes): later in the same week, you apply the material through exercises, discussions and problem-solving with your coach
  • Self-study – reading: revise and practise between sessions; you decide how much you do
  • A bespoke educational game (“World of Wisdom”): practise the core concepts in an engaging way
  • An AI study assistant: a course-specific chatbot, available 24 hours a day for exercises and explanations (remain critical and check the information)
  • Weekly podcast episodes: revise and reinforce each week’s content on the go
  • Weekly quizzes: test your knowledge with immediate, automated feedback

During the course, you will learn in a blended learning environment that combines live online teaching with independent study and interactive learning resources. The emphasis is on applying theory to realistic business situations.

The course fees for this programme are €1,150, excluding the exam.

Yes. The course runs for six weeks and combines two short live online sessions per week with flexible self-study. The total study commitment is approximately 20 to 30 hours. This includes 12 hours of live online teaching, a digital final exam, and an average amount of self-study time. This structure allows you to combine your learning effectively with your work.

Financial accounting shows how an organisation is performing financially. Management accounting helps you analyse costs and use financial information for internal decision-making and planning. Both topics are covered in the course.

By the end of the course, you’ll be better able to understand financial figures, actively participate in financial discussions and better support business decisions with financial information. This will make it easier to collaborate with colleagues in finance.

At the end of the course, you will take a digital written final exam. If you achieve a satisfactory result, you will receive a Fontys certificate as proof of successful completion of the course.
