Pregnancy and parenthood

If you are pregnant, or combine your studies with caring for a child or children, this may affect your study progress. Educational institutions have to comply with the General Equal Treatment Act and have a special duty of care towards pregnant students and student mothers. It is important that you make proper arrangements for leave, absence, (temporary) deregistration from the study programme and return to the study programme.

What can you do yourself?

If you are pregnant e/or you combine your studies with caring for a child or children, discuss your situation with your student coach and a student dean. You may be able to claim financial facilities such as single-parent allowance (DUO) and/or graduation support (Profileringsfonds). A student counselor can inform you about this and support you in submitting an application. As a (future) father, it is also advisable to discuss your situation.
