Symposium: Data after Death | Tilburg
06 May 2025 15:45 - 17:45 CEST
Programme

What happens to your photos, voice notes, search history, emails, and social media accounts when you die? Do they rest in peace, or do they live on in the cloud forever? This symposium explores who controls your digital legacy and why that matters. (SG Certificate*)

15:45-17:45. Walk-in from 15:30 hrs.
Free of charge, registration requiredRegister for this symposium here

Death isn’t the end, at least not onlineIn an age where our digital lives are deeply intertwined with our identity, death no longer draws a clean line. As artificial intelligence and deepfake technology become more powerful, we are faced with fascinating, and sometimes disturbing, questions. Should a grieving daughter speak with a chatbot version of her late father? Is it healing, or haunting, to see a deepfaked video of a lost loved one offering comfort? Who decides what happens to your digital self, and what rights do the dead have?SymposiumDuring this program will explore the legal, ethical, and social dimensions of digital legacy. From deepfake therapies to the legality of receiving passwords from passed away loved ones, from digital wills to the right not to be resurrected, we shine a light on a topic that (eventually) touches us all, yet is often left undiscussed.Speakers will be announced soon

This lecture is organized by Studium Generale in cooperation with Enigma.Contact: Hannah van den Bosch (Studium Generale) * For students, this program can count toward the Studium Generale certificate.

Film Classic: Oldboy
06 May 2025 19:30 - 21:30 CEST
Programme

 EINDHOVEN

€ 5,00 incl. btw (Student)€ 10,00 incl. btw (Others)

Genre: thriller, war action, drama
Language: Korean subtitles: English
Length: 2 hrs.

Fifteen years of imprisonment. No explanation. No contact with the outside world. Just a television as a window to what he is missing. And then – without warning nor reason,Oh Dae-Su is released. What follows is a gripping race against time as Dae-su hunts for answers—and his captor. He has five days to solve the twisted puzzle of his own imprisonment.

With the Korean crime thriller Oldboy - which Quentin Tarantino has famously called one of his favorite films - director Park Chan-wook set out to explore a different kind of revenge than his 2002 film, Sympathy for Mr. VengeanceOldboy focuses on the purging, cathartic effect of revenge. According to Park Chan-wook, we live in a world of anger—an anger that often has no outlet. As long as a society fails to resolve its hostility and hatred in other ways, revenge will remain a powerful form of expression.
And remember……..revenge is a dish best served cold.

This film will be preceded by an introduction by film teacher Twan Arts.

Awards
Winner of the Grand Prix and nominee for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Reviews
“Oldboy is a powerful film not because of what it depicts, but because of the depths of the human heart which it strips bare.” Chicago Sun-Times

“It's a movie that you feel you're not so much watching on screen as having beamed directly into your skull from some malign, alien planet of horror.” The Guardian

“A wild, intensely cinematic ride into two men's burning desire to get even.” Variety

Reading (What is) Bildung?
07 May 2025 12:40 - 13:20 CEST
Programme

EINDHOVEN

But what is Bildung actually? Our guest today, Dr. Ansgar Mohnkern, dedicates this lecture to this question which is, as simple as it sounds, by no means easy to be answered. Bildung is often translated as "education" or "personal development," but its meaning runs much deeper—and it’s more connected to technical studies than you might think. Dr. Mohnkern traces the roots of the concept back to late 18th-century biology, revealing how Bildung first emerged in the natural sciences. From there, we journey through history to the early 19th century, where thinkers like Goethe and Humboldt shaped the classical semantics of Bildung as education and improvement of the individual, —an idea that still influences schools and universities today.
What role does Bildung play in our modern world, with its highly specialized knowledge and increasing social complexity? This lecture invites you to reflect on that—and on your own position in society—as we explore how Bildung remains a vital compass for navigating both education and life.

Broaden your horizon: build your Bildung.

About the speaker
Dr. Ansgar Mohnkern is Assistant Professor of German at the University of Amsterdam since 2012. He studied in Bonn and Yale (Ph.D. 2011) and his work focuses on German and European literature, intellectual history, and their  relationship to knowledge, society and politics. He is also an author of books and essays. Recent books include an “essay on the political semantics of soccer”, “a critique of the ideological practice of narrative in the age of capitalism” and “a metaphorological study on the problem of ground”. He published critical articles on literature and philosophy (including Goethe, Kant, Hölderlin, Marx, Stifter, Robert Walser, Kafka, Rilke, Blumenberg).

Film: Amal
07 May 2025 19:30 - 21:30 CEST
Programme

EINDHOVEN

€ 5,00 incl. btw (Student)€ 10,00 incl. btw (Others)

Genre: Drama
Language: French, subtitles: English
Length: 1 hr. 47 min.

Amal, a teacher at a Brussels school played by award-winning actress Lubna Azabal, encourages her students to cultivate a love of reading and freedom of expression, even if it means putting themselves at risk. Her bold teaching methods will dramatically change the lives of her students and their families.

Amal offers an unflinching look at the challenges of teaching in Brussels.  Director Jawd Rhalib masterfully creates tension, choosing silence over music to let the story’s emotional weight speak for itself.  The result? A gripping, somber drama that earned multiple awards.

Awards
Lubna Azabal won Best Actress at the Magritte Awards and Best International Actress at Días de Cine Awards. The film received multiple nominations, underscoring its powerful impact and critical acclaim.

Studium Generale movie: Birdman | Tilburg
07 May 2025 19:30 - 21:30 CEST
Programme

Fame
The aging actor Riggan (Michael Keaton) once became famous thanks to the superhero movie Birdman but his fame is waning. The only thing that can save his ego is a starring role on Broadway. But the show has disastrous tryouts and expectations toward opening night are dwindling visibly. “You're not an actor, you're a celebrity,” scoffs a venomous theater critic. In a seemingly uninterrupted shot, Riggan roams the St James Theatre in New York, a grand and spectacular technical feat, showing what cinema is capable of. Around it all hovers the ghost of Birdman himself - at times we catch a glimpse of his beak-shaped mask and feathered cape, poison dripping into Riggan's ear, like an evil advisor.

Awards

Birdman has been received as a brilliant, postmodern meta-masterpiece. Birdman won the major Oscars: Best Picture, Best Direction, Best Original Script and Cinematography.

Lecture: Nostalgia & pop music | Tilburg
08 May 2025 15:00 - 16:00 CEST
Programme

What role does nostalgia play in pop music and to what extent does this affect innovation? What ambivalent role does the youth play in this? Sociologist Bram Peper will tell you ‘All you need to know about…’ Nostalgia & pop music. (SG Certificate*)

15:00-16:00. Walk-in from 14:45 hrs.
Free entrance, registration is not required, but be in time, limited number of seats available.

The most innovative cultural asset is undoubtedly (pop) music. The bearers of this innovation are the youth, and they have the future. At the same time, pop music also seems quite conservative. Much contemporary music grabs, picks and samples with full conviction from the past. 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s parties are well attended. Even Gabber (Dutch hardcore) is back. What role does nostalgia play in pop music and to what extent does this affect innovation? What ambivalent role does the youth play in this? And is innovative music problematic?SpeakerDr. Bram Peper is lecturer at the department of Sociology. He teaches on sociology, social theory, gender, work-life issues, welfare states and sociology of work. He is active in various research areas, including nostalgia. In his spare time he is a fanatic DJ.

All You Need to Know About…This is a lecture in the series ‘All you need to know about…’, introductory lectures on essential topics and inspirational thinkers. After these 60-minute expert presentations, you can confidently engage in a conversation about the topic discussed. Do you have one of your favorite professors in mind to get him/her to talk about one of the essential topics in his/her field of expertise? Please let us know!

This lecture is organized by Studium Generale.Contact: Has Klerx (Studium Generale) * For students, this program can count toward the Studium Generale certificate.

Workshop: How to deal with polarization? | Eindhoven
08 May 2025 19:30 - 21:00 CEST
Programme

€ 8,00 incl. btw (Student)

Finding it hard to talk about politics, health, or climate change without things spiraling out of control? In today’s polarized world, even casual discussions with friends, family, or classmates can quickly get heated. This workshop will give you insights on how to navigate tough conversations and connect with someone whose opinions may be very different from yours.

Clashing opinions and growing disagreements often come with all sorts of labels and value judgments. Before you know it, you're called a “wappie”, woke, a climate activist or denier, and so on. These labels fuel an us-versus-them mindset and make real connection harder. How can we break through this and keep seeing each other as human beings first? In this workshop you’ll learn more about polarization, reflect on your role in it, and explore ways to counteract it. Get curious about your own and others’ opinions and practice how to hold opposing views without driving the divide.

The workshop will be led by Noortje Bot from the Humanistisch Verbond (Dutch Humanist Association). The Humanistisch Verbond is an independent organization that stands for a free and humane society. They promote humanist values, free thought, and self-determination and organize activities that focus on meaningful dialogue on ethical and social issues. Noortje previously worked as a lecturer at the University of Humanistic Studies in Utrecht and is now mainly active as a trainer.

Ticket reservation: students, PhDs and EngDs only
This workshop is open exclusively to students, PhDs and EngDs. Before reserving your spot, please review the rules for workshops. You can order a student ticket by clicking the black order button on this page.
