A university of applied sciences is a higher education institution offering internationally recognised bachelor's degrees that combine theory with practice. Teaching is interactive and focused on applying what you learn in realistic settings. Throughout your studies, you'll work closely with peers, lecturers and professionals from the field.

Many international tech companies work in English-speaking teams. Dutch is valuable, but you do not need to feel like language stops your future.     During my studies, I had the opportunity to intern at ASML as a Virtual Infrastructure Architect Intern. This was a role that challenged both my networking expertise and problem-solving skills on a daily basis. Working in such a high-tech environment showed me what cyber security excellence truly looks like in practice.From the start, I was driven by the ambition to work in organisations where security is mission critical, such as international banks or government institutions. The ICT programme at Fontys gave me a strong technical foundation, but more importantly, it taught me how to apply that knowledge in real-world scenarios.That combination of academic depth and hands-on experience helped me secure my current role as a DevSecOps Engineer at Adfinis, a Swiss technology company. Today, I work on secure, high-availability solutions for banks and public sector organisations.

    My name is Marlene and I come from Puebla, Mexico. I chose to study abroad because I was eager to experience the change. Coming into a different country, you always expect the ‘cultural shock’. That’s what I was looking forward to, because after the cultural shock, you have to adapt. Being able to adapt to change is a great skill, and one that I enjoy challenging myself with. I also wanted to experience life in a different country.I chose Industrial Engineering and Management because I think this is a bachelor that opens your horizons to almost any industry there is. That always felt safe to me, and I always had an aptitude for school and the more logical subjects, so I figured that if I went into Industrial Engineering & Management I would do well, and have the opportunity to shape my future career according to my interests.When preparing to study abroad, I definitely kept a close watch on the emails sent by Fontys, and took their suggestions. Of course I also did some research myself on the country, I looked at how the streets looked, if the supermarkets were accessible everywhere, etc. Also, knowing a bit about the language, the culture, and the food never hurts before visiting a country.Having been here for a while I can say I loveeee studying in the Netherlands. Yes, the weather is not the nicest, and yes, the food is not great, but I think the way of life here makes me really happy. One of my favorite things is being able to have my afternoon free, and cycle or go walk around the center and get a snack or a drink with my friends. I think something that surprised me about the Netherlands is the cleanliness. Although the Dutch love to celebrate, the streets will always be squeaky clean the day after!One of the biggest differences in education compared to my home country is the strong focus on practical experience. At Fontys, working on real company projects is part of the programme. In Mexico, students often need to find these opportunities on their own. I really appreciated that we worked with real companies and received guidance from our teachers throughout the process.If I could give one tip to someone who wants to study abroad, it would be this: it can be challenging, but the most valuable experiences often are!

    Studying abroad is the beginning of a new everyday life. In the Netherlands, you'll quickly feel at home thanks to welcoming student communities, vibrant cities and an international atmosphere.  The Netherlands is known for its safe, open and inclusive society, where people from many different cultures and backgrounds live, study and work together.  

    Everything within easy reach

    Campus, supermarkets and the city centre are often just a short bike ride away. Dutch cities are compact, making it easy to get wherever you need to be. Don’t be surprised if your bike becomes one of your everyday essentials!  

    Whether you're cycling or taking public transport, getting around is easy. Trains, buses, trams and metros connect cities across the country, so you can easily discover new places, visit friends or travel to the airport. All without needing a car.  

    Living in the Netherlands also means Europe is on your doorstep. With good rail connections and Eindhoven Airport nearby, it’s perfect for travelling home, welcoming visiting family or a European city trip.

    As an EU student, you pay the same tuition as Dutch students. Non-EU students pay a different rate. All information about tuition, regulations, and more can be found here.

    No, knowledge of the Dutch language is not required! Fontys offers many English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes. There are also many companies looking for English-speaking interns and colleagues. Most people in the Netherlands speak English as well, so as an international student, you’ll quickly feel at home and find your way around. If you're interested, we do offer courses for internationals with a wish to learn Dutch.

    Finding a place to live can be challenging, so we recommend starting early! Fontys helps students by reserving a limited number of accommodations for first-year international students, but demand is high. Find out more about accommodation in the Netherlands by visiting our dedicated page.

    Internships are an important part of studying at Fontys. As a student at a University of Applied Sciences, you’ll get hands-on experience by working at a real company. Internships can last several months and are often paid (but this varies from company to company). During your internship, you will gain valuable work experience and build a professional network. An internship can even lead to a job after graduation!

    To study at Fontys in the Netherlands you need:

    • A secondary school diploma that meets the requirements of your chosen programme
    • A good level of English
    • A valid passport or ID card (as an EU citizen, you don’t need a visa)
    • Finances to cover tuition fees and living costs
    • Insurance, it is obliged by law to have health insurance in the Netherlands. Every student enrolled at Fontys is expected to have fulfilled their insurance obligations
    • A place to live, as housing can be competitive – start searching early!

    Specific deadlines depend on the programme you are interested in, but here are the most common ones:

    • 1 May – Application deadline for most bachelor’s programmes
    • 1 June – Deadline for arranging housing support from Fontys (earlier is better!)
    • August – Last steps, including tuition payment and final documents
    • September – Start of the academic year!

    Some programmes have different deadlines, so always check the specific requirements for your study choice.

    Yes! The Netherlands is a very safe country to live with a high standard of living and excellent healthcare. Dutch cities are student-friendly, and most people speak English, making it easy to ask for help. Like in any country, it’s good to stay aware of your surroundings, especially in busy areas. But overall, the Netherlands is a very welcoming and secure place to live and study.
