About this minor

Devices like smartphones, computers, solar cells and AI systems all rely on one essential innovation: semiconductors. This minor offers a broad introduction to semiconductor technology and industries. Starting with the physical principles, you will explore semiconductor materials, fabrication processes and devices. Throughout the program, you will gain valuable industry insights through excursions and guest lectures from leading companies such as ASML and NXP.

More about the minor

In this minor, you will discover how chips are created, from the underlying device physics to manufacturing, packaging, and integration technologies. In short: from sand to silicon to finished products. You will explore the complete semiconductor value chain, with topics ranging from lithography, metrology and yield to advanced packaging, chiplets and 3D integration. By combining fundamental knowledge with practical experience, this minor provides you with a comprehensive understanding of the semiconductor industry.

Programme

The Applied Technology in Semiconductors minor is based on a mixed workload. During
a 20 week timeframe you can expect 12-18 hours a week of lectures and coaching, taking place in Eindhoven. Inspiring guest lectures will be provided by experts from industry. Additionally, there will be excursions to leading semiconductor companies, and industry projects will be executed.

You will obtain valuable insights and knowledge concerning semiconductor physics and devices. The chip fabrication process will be scrutinized; ASML actively takes part in the education of essential lithography steps.

1. Analyze and explain the relationship between semiconductor physics and device operation, including charge carriers, p-n junctions, MOS structures, and relevant electrical and optical phenomena.

2. Analyze material properties and physicochemical processes in semiconductors, including crystal structures, band structures, defects, and interactions between materials in thin-film systems.

3. Evaluate and substantiate fabrication processes (deposition, etching, doping, and planarization), and explain their influence on material properties and device performance.

4. Analyze and optimize lithography and patterning technologies based on optical principles and process parameters such as resolution, alignment, and process window.

5. Apply and critically interpret metrology and characterization techniques, and relate measurement results to process variations, material properties, and device behavior.

6. Analyze and optimize packaging, integration, and system concepts, including thermal, electrical, and mechanical aspects of advanced semiconductor systems (such as chiplets and heterogeneous integration).

This minor is open to students who:

  • Are motivated to work on complex, interdisciplinary projects.
  • Have a background in Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Are proficient in English.
