Healthcare
Healthcare professionals are working under increasing pressure: more patients, fewer hands, higher costs. Technology can help, but how do you use it to improve care without losing the human dimension? A promising prototype rarely reaches care practice without the right partners. The step from idea to working application calls for collaboration between technology, healthcare and research. That is where HTSM comes in.
Within the theme Healthcare (BioTech/MedTech), COE HTSM works on practice-oriented solutions at the intersection of biomedical technology and engineering, together with healthcare organisations, companies and knowledge institutions. We are the knowledge partner for public-private partnerships.
What we work on
COE HTSM focuses on the development and application of healthcare technology that supports healthcare professionals and helps patients.
Our approach
We combine technological innovation (particularly in screening, sensor technology and robotics) with knowledge of care processes. The focus lies on biomedical technology, engineering and AI.
Our focus includes:
- screening and diagnostics, such as the early detection of disease
- sensor technology and imaging for medical applications
- automation and support of care processes
- translating biomedical research into applicable healthcare innovations
We work demand-driven: healthcare institutions and companies bring in practical questions; we connect them with the right expertise, researchers and students.
Examples from practice
Within Healthcare (MedTech) we run a range of research projects in which technology is developed and tested together with healthcare professionals. These projects illustrate how technology, healthcare and research come together in concrete applications with societal impact. One example is:
Glow-in-the-dark molecular diagnostics
A fast, affordable test that detects pathogens through a bioluminescent signal, readable with a smartphone camera and without a laboratory. Fontys and TU/e are jointly developing this diagnostic platform as an alternative to the PCR test, with results within 30 minutes and applicable at the point of care.
Results and publications
Research within Healthcare (BioTech/MedTech) delivers:
- new diagnostic and screening technologies
- insights into the applicability and reliability of healthcare innovations
- methods for implementing technology in care processes
- publications, reports and educational modules
Where possible, we share results with the professional field. In research involving privacy-sensitive or medical data, we ensure careful handling of information, and results are anonymised or translated into generic insights.
Working with partners
Within this theme we work with partners who understand and want to make the translation from technology to care practice:
- healthcare institutions and hospitals
- medical technology companies and start-ups
- knowledge institutions such as universities and research centres
- public organisations and regional networks
Together we develop healthcare innovations that fit daily practice and genuinely contribute to better care.
