ACT! Accelerating the Circular Transition

The Netherlands wants to be carbon neutral and circular by 2050. This means we use fewer resources and protect our planet. Together with experts, companies, and citizens, ACT! will create ideas for a circular Netherlands. We use models to explore new ways of working in furniture, high-tech, and neighbourhoods. Together, we design smart solutions for a better, fairer future.

What does the project entail?

Fontys works with companies and partners to make the high-tech industry in Noord-Brabant more circular and sustainable. We look for smart ways to use fewer materials and create new, green value chains. By 2050, half of the sector’s income should come from sustainable solutions. Fontys also helps to develop strong, future-proof areas. Together, we build a healthy and green region.

Projectresults

The entire project aims to achieve the following results:

  • A plan for a circular society in the Netherlands by 2050, which takes into account the limits of our planet, including four concrete examples of how to make the Netherlands circular and the consequences for the environment, material use, the economy, and human well-being.
  • New models to investigate and monitor how the Netherlands is transitioning to a circular society. These models examine the impact, direction, and speed of this transition, including example scenarios that show where we can achieve benefits from the transition to a circular economy and clear figures on the potential downsides of the transition.
  • Plans outlining what needs to be done to move forward, for example, for the government, businesses, investors, and citizens. This also covers regulations and working methods.
  • Developing methods, tools, and rules to create, test, and monitor plans together with different groups of people. Policymakers can use these to make sound decisions. This consists of two parts: New ways of working for different plans, so that groups can make better decisions together. Collaborating in a specific location, with people who manage everything effectively between different companies and groups, so that the region can develop well.
  • Network analysis: circular and sustainable furniture value web, planning tools for managing the circular transition, of circular activities in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area and sustainable and robust manufacturing industry in Brabant.
  • A toolbox to assess how circular society is.

Period

The project runs from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2030.
