Horn
Studying horn at Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg, you will build up a broad, challenging repertoire and will be able to place various works into context. You will experience the diversity of artistic practice in numerous concerts, ensembles, projects and various formats. You will receive one-to-one tuition in your core subject and learn all about the different music of the enormous horn repertoire, from baroque to contemporary, from chamber music to orchestra, from traditional to experimental. Due to the wide range of (minor) options available, you will be able to follow your interests and explore new areas. You will gain practical experience through different projects and our audition training programme, where we prepare you for your first auditions for youth orchestras up to auditions for professional orchestra positions.
Teachers
Fréderick Franssen
Fréderick Franssen (1977) is a member of the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. He studied with the renowned French horn professor Erich Penzel at Maastricht Academy of Music where he graduated in 2002 with honors. He performed as a guest player with orchestras in Germany such as the Rundfunk Sinfonieorchester Berlin. Since 2000 Fréderick has been working in the Netherlands; first with the Radio Symphony Orchestra and since 2005 with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition to his orchestral work, he performs as a soloist. Since 2017 he has been professor French Horn at the Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg.
Hans van der Zanden
While still a student at the conservatories of Maastricht and Tilburg (NL) Hans van der Zanden received his first invitation from Maestro Jac van Steen to play as principal horn in the Neues Berliner Kammerorchester. Soon after he was appointed principal horn in The North Netherlands Orchestra in Groningen, NL, Currently, Hans van der Zanden is principal horn of the Brussels Philharmonic. Hans can be heard on a multitude of television and film soundtracks. His extensive catalogue includes films scored by Alan Silvestri, Elliot Goldenthal, Laurence Rosenthal and the Oscar winning film, “The Artist” by Ludovic Bource.
Hans van der Zanden gives yearly Masterclasses in Chiaramonte Gulfi (Sicily), Horn Festival Fagagna (It). Since September 2018, Hans van der Zanden is professor of horn at Fontys Academy of Arts, Tilburg (NL).
Audition
Candidates living in the Netherlands/ Belgium/ Western Germany will do a live audition.
Candidates from other countries will do an online audition.
Duration of the live audition is 15/20 minutes.
The audition program should include:
• 2 etudes
• 1 concert piece or concerto
