Fontys Sustainable
Fontys wants to contribute to a fair, healthy, and future-proof world.
We do this by making sustainability visible in everything we do: in our education, research, and buildings. This way, we work together towards a sustainable university of applied sciences, with and for our students, staff, and partners.
Why This Matters To Us
As an educational institution, we help shape the world of tomorrow. We educate people who will make a difference. That’s why we want to be clear about what we are already doing, and where we still want to improve.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) guide our work in education and research, and in our daily choices about energy, climate, healthy buildings, and responsible purchasing.
What We Do
- Sustainability is part of more and more of our programmes.
- Students work on real-life challenges, for example in energy, circularity, and inclusion.
- Teachers share knowledge and improve education together with our research groups and companies.
- Fontys is also one of the initiators of the SDGs on Stage platform. This platform, created from the SDG Coalition, helps university of applied sciences students find a sustainable internship.
- We reduce our CO₂ emissions and make our buildings more energy-efficient.
- We buy responsibly and reduce waste.
- Our campuses are becoming greener, healthier, and easier to reach by bike and public transport.
- Researchers and students work on solutions for societal challenges.
- We focus on themes such as the circular economy, healthy living environments, energy, and mobility.
- Fontys does this through research groups and Centres of Expertise, together with companies, governments, and citizens.
How we organise this
Our Green Office at Fontys helps students and staff turn sustainable ideas into action. They organise activities, share knowledge, and make sure sustainability stays on the agenda. Every year, we review our progress and adjust our goals.
What we want to achieve
- Less energy use and more renewable energy.
- Lower CO₂ emissions by 2030.
- More reuse of materials (circular working).
- More focus on wellbeing, diversity, and equal opportunities.
Reporting
Fontys reports on sustainability every year in the annual report. The main themes are environmental, social, and governance (ESG). In the annual report, you can read how we are doing, what our goals are, and how we want to improve. The full report can be found on our website under Governance.
