Statement Fontys over grensoverschrijdend gedrag

In de afgelopen weken zijn er in de media, aan keukentafels en op heel veel andere plekken gesprekken gevoerd over seksueel geweld en ongewenst gedrag. Het tumult rondom The Voice is daar natuurlijk de directe aanleiding voor, maar dat mag nooit de enige reden zijn waarom we er nu met elkaar over praten. (Seksueel) grensoverschrijdend gedrag is helaas geen incident, het komt bijna dagelijks voor op alle mogelijke plekken in onze maatschappij.
Uit onderzoek blijkt dat één op de tien studenten in zijn of haar leven te maken heeft gehad met seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag. Gebeurtenissen die nare gevolgen hebben op de ontwikkeling van jonge mensen en hun talenten. Helaas vindt ongewenst gedrag soms ook binnen onze eigen community van zo’n 45.000 studenten en 5000 medewerkers plaats. Het gaat dan niet alleen over seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag, maar ook over pesten, uitsluiting, intimidatie, fysiek geweld, sabotage en discriminatie. We vinden dat onacceptabel. Fontys moet een veilige plek zijn waar je je welkom voelt en waar je erop mag vertrouwen dat je jezelf mag zijn.
Dat begint bij het bewust worden van deze problematiek en erover met elkaar in gesprek te gaan én te blijven, ook al gaat het om gevoelige thema’s. We mogen er onze ogen niet voor sluiten of ervan wegkijken omdat het ‘lastig’ is. We moeten elkaar aanspreken op ongewenst gedrag, ook als gaat het om een collega of een mede-student.
Sociale veiligheid en (seksueel) ongewenst gedrag krijgen de komende maanden binnen Fontys extra aandacht. Daarmee willen we de bewustwording bevorderen, de kennis bij studentcoaches en vertrouwenspersonen vergroten en hen handvatten bieden om signalen te herkennen. Die belofte leggen we onder andere vast door het manifest van Amnesty International tegen seksueel geweld te ondertekenen en te ondersteunen. Als onderwijsprofessionals is het immers onze taak om samen een omgeving te creëren waarin talenten optimaal tot bloei komen en mensen met plezier naar hun werk gaan.

Statement Fontys about transgressive behaviour
Over the past few weeks, there have been conversations about sexual violence and inappropriate behaviour in the media, in our homes, and many other places. The uproar surrounding the tv programme The Voice of Holland is the immediate cause for this, but that should never be the only reason why we talk about it with each other now. (Sexual) transgressive behaviour is unfortunately not an incident, it occurs almost daily in all parts of our society.
Research shows that one in ten students has had to deal with sexually transgressive behaviour in his or her life. These are events that have unpleasant consequences for the development of young people and their talents. Unfortunately, inappropriate behaviour sometimes also takes place within our own community of 45,000 students and 5,000 employees. This includes not only sexually transgressive behaviour, but also bullying, exclusion, intimidation, physical violence, sabotage and discrimination. We find this unacceptable. Fontys must be a safe place where you feel welcome and where you can be yourself.
This starts with becoming aware of these issues and discussing them with each other, even if they involve sensitive themes. We must not close our eyes to it or look away because it is 'difficult'. We must address each other for undesirable behaviour, even if it involves a colleague or fellow student.
Social safety and (sexually) undesirable behaviour will receive extra attention within Fontys in the coming months. We want to promote awareness, increase the knowledge of student coaches and confidential counsellors and offer them tools to recognize signals. One of the ways in which we make this promise is by signing and supporting Amnesty International's manifesto against sexual violence. After all, as educational professionals, it is our task to create an environment together in which talents flourish optimally and people enjoy going to work.
