Do you like mathematics? Would you like to help organisations to solve their hardest problems? Do you like to puzzle with data and look for patterns? Then the Data Science track of Applied Mathematics is the place for you!

About the programme

This programme prepares you to become a Data Scientist with a focus on applications in Logistics and Engineering. You could work for example on the most efficient route for a delivery service of a (web)shop or supermarket, a dashboard for a theme park with expected waiting times, a prediction of the number of returns for a clothing brand or a model to plan replacement of airplane parts to avoid problems while flying.


Artificial Intelligence
is a common theme within the whole programme. It is a combination of mathematics, statistics and logic that helps to take quick, smart and personalised decisions. Voice recognition, movie suggestions on Netflix and self-driving cars are examples of technical developments with artificial intelligence.

What are you going to learn?

In the first two years, our lecturers will equip you with a broad, but solid mathematical basis. During your entire studies you will work on challenging projects with your fellow students and you will gain practical experience during different internships. We guide you in mathematical modelling, analysis and solving complex problems.

After studying Data Science, you will be the person who identifies problems in an organisation and finds solutions using mathematics. You will learn to work together in a multidisciplinary team and to master technical matters. 

What can you expect?

  • A solid mix of theory (knowledge) and practice;
  • Work on real (company) assignments and projects;
  • You will learn about ethics as we cannot leave all choices to be taken by machines;
  • You will develop programming skills on a higher level, in Python and other programmes that you would need for engineering and operations research in order to improve company processes;

Taking a technical course at Fontys: what will your 4 years look like?

In the video, we explain what studying technology at Fontys looks like.

In the first year you will be prepared with a solid basis of mathematics and data science, especially in the field of Logistics and Engineering. A study week consists of:

 

  • 16 hours lessons/theory
  • 12 hours of practice/projects
  • 12 hours of independent studying

During the second year you will follow your first internship that focuses on orientation in the professional field. At the end of this year, you will complete the basic knowledge and skills. In addition to these basics, you will have knowledge of the following fields:

Operations Research
Operations Research focuses mainly on the logistics sector. You will learn how to collect and structure relevant information. You will also learn how to apply mathematical models and techniques to solve logistic problems. You finish the year with a recommendation for the future distribution network of a (fictitious) company.

Data Science
Data Science, in addition to probability and statistics, you will also learn programming skills. The disciplines of mathematics and computer science meet here. In addition to collecting data, you will learn to analyse, model and clean up this data and make the data transparent. This enables you to discover patterns, make predictions and conclude. You could for example work on a selection method for picking ripe tomatoes with photographs.

Engineering Mathematics
In Engineering Mathematics, you will learn to translate a practical context into a mathematical model. Important subjects are 'systems and signals' and 'modelling with differential equations'. Find out for example when a small deviation of the position of a screw during an assembly process of a car becomes a big problem.

All students follow the learning line Professionalism. Here you will develop soft skills such as cooperation, presentation and communication of complex matters in an easy way. You will need to reflect on yourself and will also be taught business ethics, networking and applying for jobs.

In the third year, you will deepen your knowledge. You will also do an internship with a company.

Minor
You will do a minor with another Fontys study programme or with another educational institute in the Netherlands or abroad. A minor is a coherent package of courses according to your interests with which you can broaden your knowledge and competencies or specialise in your field of study. You have, to a certain extent, a free choice in the content of the minor. It is also possible to take the minor as a pre-masters course if you wish to pursue a master's degree after completing this programme. 

Internship
During your internship, you will apply your knowledge and experience in the business world, either in the Netherlands or abroad. You will receive intensive supervision from the programme and at your work placement.

Your final year of study will be devoted to graduation. You continue to deepen your knowledge of Data Science. In the second half of the year, you will carry out a graduation assignment at a company in the Netherlands or abroad. You will write a report and give a graduation presentation. The graduation supervisor and the company supervisor will help you with this and will assess the assignment. A graduation assignment is often the first step towards a job.

We accept HL and SL results and these students can be exempted from the English language requirement.
Mathematics is a mandatory subject (regardless of the level, HL or SL). The minimum score is 24 points (IB diploma awarded).

  • For students with other secondary education/ high school diplomas:

As soon as your application is visible in Studielink we will contact you by e-mail and ask you to send us your documents for the diploma assessment.

    Visa

    As a non-EU/EEA student, the Netherlands will require an Entry Visa* (MVV) and a Residence Permit. Fontys will apply on behalf of its students for these documents. We recommend you start the process early, i.e. approximately three months before you plan to enter the Netherlands.

      Level Mathematics
      For successful completion of the study programme, we recommend a minimum starting level of Mathematics B at havo 5. 

      Basic course in Mathematics and Physics
      Have you had little Mathematics and Physics during your mbo education or has it been a while since you studied these subjects? Take the Basic course in Mathematics and Physics and increase your knowledge and skills in Mathematics and Physics. This way, you can be sure of a good transition from mbo to hbo. Please note this course is only available in Dutch language. It is required to have completed the subject Economics and/or the subject Management & Organisation. If you finished HAVO and chose the Culture and Society profile, you also need to have finished Mathematics A or B.

      Language

      As an applicant with a Dutch mbo-4, havo- or vwo-diploma you will be exempted from taking the language profiency test.

        Costs

        The tuition fees indicator helps you to determine the tuition rate for your situation. The information and tuition rates from this indicator are without engagement.


        Statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees

        A distinction is made between statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees. Only if you satisfy all statutory requirements regarding your nationality and if you have not yet been awarded a degree, will you be eligible for statutory tuition fees. Via the tuition fees indicator, you can secure an indication of the type of tuition fees that will be applicable in your situation. To do so, please make use of the indicator above.

        Distinctions are made between the following types of Institutional Tuition Fees:

        • Low institutional tuition fees
        • High institutional tuition fees


        Different types of tuition fees and Exemption Regulations

        These different types of tuition fees and the Exemption Regulations are fully detailed in the:

            The amount to be paid may vary in accordance with the following situations:

            • If you have enrolled in more than one course programme (at Fontys and/or elsewhere), it is possible that you may only be obliged to pay one set of statutory tuition fees.
            • If you believe that you may be eligible to pay only the statutory tuition fees on the basis of information that may be unknown to us, please report this to your Course Department.
            • If it later transpires that you do not meet the requirements for statutory tuition fees, you will be obliged to pay the (higher) institutional tuition fees and if this is the case, you will be notified accordingly.

            Some Fontys study programmes offer the NL scholarship to their students. Check out the link to see if this study programme participates and for more information.

            You might also be eligible for other scholarships not provided by Fontys. These can be found on the Study in NL website.

            Paying in instalments

            Collection will occur in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.

            If paying the full sum in a single payment

            If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. If you commence your studies after 1 September, the direct debit will be executed on or around the 26th of the month in which you commence your studies.

            Non-EU students

            Incoming non-EU students will receive a payment letter from their study department, which must be paid before the deadline. In the following academic years, payment can be made by direct debit.

            Non-SEPA

            If you have a Bank account number of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, and you are a national of a country outside the EEA without an address in The Netherlands, then you will receive a payment letter from Fontys via your course department.

            The Dutch currency unit is the Euro (i.e. abbreviated to ‘EUR’ or ‘€’).

            The average living expenses per month for a foreign student living and studying in Holland are between EUR 1,100 and EUR 1,500 per month. These living expenses cover rent, insurance, food, public transportation, books, clothing and other general costs. 

            Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 14.641 per year (€ 7.320 per semester)

            Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Study books are usually bought at the start of the semester and therefore it is wise to reserve and have direct access to an amount at the start of the semester which can cover the price of all study books and the living expenses for the first two months. 

            Before starting your study at Fontys, you must find suitable housing. Unfortunately, it is not easy for international students to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis. Start your accommodation search early. Please be aware that finding a place to live is your own responsibility. However, we are happy to assist in any way we can.

             

            Career opportunities

            After the programme, you will be ready for the labour market. You will be able to study mathematical models of technical systems, to collect and process data in business processes or to tackle logistical problems.

            You can work in various fields and positions like for example:  

            • Data analyst at a Railway or Transport company
            • Logistics specialist at a distribution centre of a webshop
            • Data Scientist at a theme park
            • Business analyst at a healthcare institution
            • Data Engineer at an engineering company

            Of course, you can also continue studying and take a master's course at Fontys or a technical university. Fontys offers master's degrees in Digital Technology Engineering and in System Design.

            Other possibilities are a teacher training programme in Mathematics or a master's programme at a university such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Industrial and Applied Mathematics or Econometrics.

            Agreements have been made with Technical University Eindhoven (TU/e) for a special programme, which makes it easy to move on to a master's programme at the TU/e.

            Student for a day on campus at Applied Mathematics/Data Science

            Discover what it’s like to study Applied Mathematics/Data Science in Eindhoven! Request to become a Student for a Day and immerse yourself in a typical day of classes. You will be together with a first-year student and attend the classes on his/her schedule. This provides you with an insight into the content of the programme and offers the opportunity to engage with both students and lecturers.
