Diploma and language requirements
A bachelor degree obtained in the Netherlands, a UK degree or equivalent qualification. For non UK and non Fontys students the following is required:
- IELTS score of 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in each element).
- TOEFL iBT score of 90 (with mimimum scores of listening 17, reading 18, speaking 20, writing 18).
Entering the UK as an EU/EEA citizen
EU citizens can enter the UK as a visitor at the moment with only a passport. Also it is recommended to take out an extra travel insurance, as the European Health Card will not be sufficient either. We advise our students to take the InsureToStudy insurance.
Keep yourself informed about the latest UK immigration rules via the following link: Visiting the UK as an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen.
Insurance
By law everyone in the Netherlands must be insured for medical expenses. The type of health insurance cover that you will require will depend on your personal situation. It is very important to ensure you are properly insured during your stay at Fontys.

Entry Visa / Authorisation for Temporary Stay (‘MVV’)
All non-EU/EEA students entering the Netherlands will require an Entry Visa (‘MVV’), except nationals from Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, the USA and Vatican City State. This Entry Visa is a sticker that is placed in your passport and is issued by the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country of origin.
Residence Permit (‘VVR’)
All those who enter the Netherlands with or without an Entry Visa (‘MVV’) and who wish to stay for a period of longer than three months, are obliged to apply for a ‘Verblijfsvergunning regulier’, or ‘VVR’ (a Residence Permit). The Immigration Officer will send the application to the Dutch Immigration & Naturalisation Service (‘IND’) on your behalf. Your Residence Permit will be ready soon after your arrival in the Netherlands.
Note:
Students from Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cameroon and Nigeria have to be aware they have to transfer the full refundable amount of the living expenses (10.500 euro for the first year ) to the bank account of Fontys. Proof by financial documents you have access to this amount will not be accepted.
If students from Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cameroon or Nigeria want Fontys to arrange accommodation, the rent (4 months + deposit) will be withheld from the living expenses and directly transferred to the landlord. In this case no other housing payments have to be made before the start of your study. Alternatively students can take care of accommodation themselves.
Insurance
If you require an entry visa and/or residence permit, insurance will form a compulsory part of the immigration procedure, which Fontys will arrange on your behalf. The visa process will provide you with further information.

Living expenses Netherlands
The Dutch currency unit is the Euro (i.e. abbreviated to ‘EUR’ or ‘€’).
The average living expenses per month for a foreign student living and studying in Holland are between EUR 900 and EUR 1,100 per month. These living expenses cover rent, insurance, food, public transportation, books, clothing and other general costs.
Dutch Immigration Service (IND) requires non-EEA students to proof they have access to € 11,520 per year (€ 5,760 per semester)
Costs within the first months upon arrival will be higher than all other months due to a housing deposit, intro week and books. Fontys offers assistance in securing suitable student accommodation in Venlo. You can apply for accommodation when applying for the master programme. Finding accommodation in Venlo for only 4 months is not always easy. Therefore, it is important to meet the prescribed deadline for accommodation, which will be given after admission. You can find more information on the application procedure for a housing request through Fontys Venlo on our website.
Please note that available student housing is limited in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis, so make sure to start your search in time. Check out our website for tips.
In Plymouth, students look for accommodation on their own. Most students find accommodation by searching online or by asking MBM alumni. In general, it is not difficult to find good accommodation in Plymouth within two weeks.

Barbara:“A a great part of the studies focussed on performing better in research work, this skillset helps to back up decision-making processes at work.”
