Aarati about IEM

My name is Aarati Khadka and I’m from Nepal. My major subject in high school was Accounting and Business Math. After graduation I studied International Business of Innovation Studies for one year. I realized I wanted to study a technical subject that is also related to business and management. So I did some research at different universities and I really loved the content of Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) at Fontys.

I am enjoying IE&M till now, everything is interesting, every day I am learning new things that can be very useful for my future career. I think the education here in the Netherlands is more practical than in Nepal. I like what we are learning every day, like the design of the course, which is teaching us to be organized, to make timetables and to utilize our time fruitfully. It is difficult for me to follow the timetable I made. I get distracted very easily. So, it’s good to learn to be punctual.

I like to work in a group. We have to work with different people from different countries that have completely different personalities. Everyone has their own talents, so I get the opportunity to learn different things. It can be a challenge, but I’m really enjoying it. I am using all my knowledge to cooperate with my group members to have the best output. Working in a group is preparing us for our future career because after completing our studies we must work with different people as well.

Company visits during the first year are fun and I got the opportunity to see how products are manufactured in a company. The coolest thing that I have experienced so far is the course productional technology. This is the subject that I am really interested in. We completed had a workshop where we made a bottle opener and the box to put it in. We made it by using different machines. I really enjoyed it because I learned how to operate the machines and make a product with it. It fascinates me a lot.

We also worked as a reverse engineer in our latest project where we had a household appliance blender. It was really a fun project. We had to check how it works, find the problems, improve it and make everything better. Every subject we are studying right now can be applied to our tasks or assignments. Teachers are also very good; they always try to relate study materials with real life and give examples related to it.
