Research vs. Applied Sciences universities
In the Netherlands, there are about 55 universities. There are two main types:
- Research universities: Focuses on training students for the independent practice of science and academic research. They prepare students for a career in research.
- Universities of applied sciences: Focuses more on practical learning and the application of knowledge. It directly prepares students for their professional careers.
Fontys is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands. At Fontys, a student learns by doing. This is called competence-based learning. The student doesn't only learn theory, but also how to use it in their future job.
Most bachelor’s programmes take four years. After graduation, you receive a bachelor’s degree. Students can also choose a follow-up programme to get a master’s degree. These programmes are made for the job market. You learn for a specific career. That is why every programme includes an internship or work placement.
