Fontys ontwikkelt nieuwe cursus data-analyse
[English below] Fontys was deze zomer vertegenwoordigd op EuroPython 2026 in Krakau, Polen. De internationale conferentie leverde niet alleen nieuwe kennis en contacten op, maar inspireerde ook tot een nieuwe introductiecursus data-analyse binnen Fontys.
Namens Fontys Technology waren Willem Oerlemans en Karel Planken aanwezig. Tijdens de conferentie volgden zij workshops en lezingen over uiteenlopende toepassingen van Python. Naast nieuwe kennis leverden vooral de gesprekken met professionals waardevolle inzichten op. Zo spraken ze met Enrique García, Senior Digital Engineer bij BAM, over de manier waarop Python wordt gebruikt voor berekeningen, datastromen en het automatiseren van werkprocessen binnen grote infrastructuurprojecten.
Toen García hoorde dat Willem en Karel namens Fontys aanwezig waren, reageerde hij enthousiast: “Wat gaaf dat jullie hier zijn. Dat zegt veel over Fontys.”
Die reactie typeert voor Willem en Karel de waarde van deelname aan een internationale conferentie als EuroPython. “Wij zijn er trots op dat Fontys ruimte geeft om dit soort internationale verbindingen te maken. Je haalt niet alleen kennis op, maar krijgt ook een goed beeld van wat er internationaal speelt en wat dat kan betekenen voor ons onderwijs.”
Van EuroPython naar nieuw onderwijs
Een concreet resultaat van het bezoek ontstond tijdens de open-source sprints in het weekend. Daar maakten Willem en Karel kennis met Humble Data, een initiatief dat data-analyse met Python toegankelijk maakt voor mensen zonder programmeer- of IT-achtergrond. Die aanpak sluit aan bij een ontwikkeling die zij ook binnen het onderwijs zien: data, automatisering en AI spelen een steeds grotere rol in vrijwel alle technische disciplines.
Tijdens de gesprekken met Jodie Burchell en Naa Ashiorkor Nortey ontstond ook het idee om onderwijsmateriaal uit te wisselen. De werkwijze van Humble Data inspireerde Willem en Karel om binnen Fontys een nieuwe introductiecursus te ontwikkelen: Practical Data Analysis with Python. Aanmelden voor de eerste editie
De eerste editie van Practical Data Analysis with Python staat gepland voor het derde kwartiel (Q3) tweede semester van studiejaar 2026-2027. Studenten en medewerkers van Fontys Technology kunnen zich nu aanmelden. Er zijn 50 plaatsen beschikbaar.

EuroPython inspires Fontys to develop new data analysis course
Fontys was represented at EuroPython 2026 in Kraków, Poland, this summer. The international conference not only provided new knowledge and valuable contacts but also inspired the development of a new introductory data analysis course at Fontys.
Willem Oerlemans and Karel Planken attended the conference on behalf of Fontys Technology. During the conference, they took part in workshops and talks covering a wide range of applications of Python. Beyond the knowledge gained, conversations with professionals provided particularly valuable insights. They spoke, for example, with Enrique García, Senior Digital Engineer at BAM, about how Python is used for calculations, data flows and the automation of work processes within large infrastructure projects.
When García heard that Willem and Karel were attending on behalf of Fontys, he responded enthusiastically: “It's great to see you here. That says a lot about Fontys.”
For Willem and Karel, this reaction captures the value of taking part in an international conference such as EuroPython. “We are proud that Fontys gives us the opportunity to build these kinds of international connections. You not only gain knowledge but also gain insight into developments taking place internationally and what they could mean for our programs.”
From EuroPython to new course
A concrete outcome of the visit emerged during the open-source sprints over the weekend. There, Willem and Karel met Humble Data, an initiative that makes data analysis with Python accessible to people without a programming or IT background. This approach reflects a development they are also seeing in education: data, automation and AI are playing an increasingly important role in almost all technical disciplines.
During their conversations with Jodie Burchell and Naa Ashiorkor Nortey, the idea of exchanging educational materials also emerged. Register for the first edition
The first edition of Practical Data Analysis with Python is scheduled for the third quarter (Q3) of the second semester of the 2026–2027 academic year. Fontys students and staff of Fontys Technology can now register. There are 50 spots available.
