    • Mechanical Engineering

Get prepared to start your studies in February

Below you will find practical information about e.g. your application, Fontys account, on campus WiFi, books and laptop requirements.

    Your application

You have sent in your application for one of the international Bachelor Engineering programmes through the website studielink.nl and have received a confirmation e-mail from Studielink. In case you have registered for a Dutch Engineering programme click here. In Studielink you will find a 'To Do List' where you can check the actions you still need to complete. You will also receive information about your application from the administrative office.

Our Student Admission Administration Officers will assist you in further follow-up actions. You can always contact them at studyengineering@fontys.nl. Please always mention your student number.

Fontys offers prospective students a Study Choice Check to support them in their study orientation and study choice process. Participation in the Study Choice Check is not compulsory for students applying for admission on the basis of an international diploma.

The main goal of the Study Choice Check is to determine how well your study programme suits your interests. This will benefit the chances of you enjoying your study time and succeeding at Fontys and ultimately also in your career. The Study Choice Check is a final confirmation to help you to decide. This will help you feel more confident, whatever your choice may be.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact your study programme.

The course of events surrounding the Study Choice Check and the study choice advice are detailed in the Study Choice Check rules. Specific details for each study programme are included in the Teaching and Examination Regulations of the study programme concerned.

For EEA* prospective students, the Study Choice Check is strongly advised, but not compulsory. However, if you come from outside the EEA the study choice check is replaced by a questionnaire and an admission interview. This is a pilot and all non-EEA students have to fill out the questionnaire and attend the interview.
For Dutch students following the international courses at Fontys Engineering the Study Choice Check is compulsory.

*The countries included in the EEA are as follows: all EU countries, including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is also regarded as an EEA country.

The tuition fees indicator helps you to determine the tuition rate for your situation. The information and tuition rates from this indicator are without engagement.

Statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees

A distinction is made between statutory tuition fees and institutional tuition fees. Only if you satisfy all statutory requirements regarding your nationality and if you have not yet been awarded a degree, will you be eligible for statutory tuition fees. Via the tuition fees indicator, you can secure an indication of the type of tuition fees that will be applicable in your situation. To do so, please make use of the indicator above.

Distinctions are made between the following types of Institutional Tuition Fees:

    • Low institutional tuition fees
    • High institutional tuition fees

Different types of tuition fees and Exemption Regulations

These different types of tuition fees and the Exemption Regulations are fully detailed in the:

The amount to be paid may vary in accordance with the following situations:

        • If you have enrolled in more than one course programme (at Fontys and/or elsewhere), it is possible that you may only be obliged to pay one set of statutory tuition fees.
        • If you believe that you may be eligible to pay only the statutory tuition fees on the basis of information that may be unknown to us, please report this to your Course Department.
        • If it later transpires that you do not meet the requirements for statutory tuition fees, you will be obliged to pay the (higher) institutional tuition fees and if this is the case, you will be notified accordingly.

        How to pay tuition fees

Please ensure that you have arranged the payment of your Tuition Fees prior to commencing your course programme(s). If you fail to do so, your (re-) enrolment will not be finalised and you will not be permitted to follow your chosen course programme(s). Please also note that if you are not enrolled, you will not be entitled to receive any student grants and/or loans.

        Digital Authorisation

You pay your tuition fees via a digital (direct debit) authorisation, either all at once or in instalments (via Fontys). You can fill in your payment details via Studielink.

        • Start September: On or around 15 May, you can fill in your payment details via Studielink.
        • Start February: You can fill in your payment details via Studielink as soon as your enrolment request is processed by Fontys.

More information about entering your payment details in Studielink can be found at info.studielink.nl/en. A lot of information can also be found in the Studielink Q&A - payment method section.

        Questions regarding Tuition Fee payments

Using Studielink for the first time? Use this step-by-step plan where you will find more detailed descriptions.

If you cannot find the answer to your question via Q&A, you will need to contact your course department. To be issued with a proof of payment document regarding your Tuition Fees (if you have enrolled in a course programme at Fontys and you have enrolled in a second course programme at another institute), you will also need to contact your course department.

If someone else is paying your tuition fees, you can indicate this in Studielink. After completing your payment information, you will receive an email with a payment link that you must forward to the person who will pay tuition fees on your behalf. Using this payment link, the person enters their own payment information after which the tuition fees will be deducted from the specified account. More information on this can be found at info.studielink.nl/en and in the Studielink Q&A - payment method section.

If you also want to attend a study programme at another higher education institution during an academic year and you are eligible for statutory tuition fees for both programmes, you only have to pay tuition fees once. Before starting your study programme, you can arrange for a Proof of Paid Tuition Fees through Studielink. For this, see the step-by-step plan 'Paying with Proof of Paid Tuition Fees' at info.studielink.nl/en.

If it is not yet possible at the other educational institution to arrange a Proof of Paid Tuition Fees via Studielink, please contact your study programme at Fontys to request your Proof of Paid Tuition Fees.

Are you already following a study programme at another educational institution and want a second enrolment at Fontys? If so, you can also arrange for a Proof of Paid Tuition Fees through Studielink. This document will then be sent to Fontys via Studielink. For this, see the step-by-step plan 'Paying with Proof of Paid Tuition Fees' at info.studielink.nl/en.

If the other educational institution is unable to forward a Proof of Paid Tuition Fees through Studielink, please contact your study programme at the other educational institution.

Two or more enrolments at Fontys

If you are enrolled in two or more study programmes at Fontys, enter your payment information for Fontys once in Studielink and pay the total amount of tuition fees due for the various study programmes. When statutory tuition fees for all enrolments are concerned, you pay a total of one statutory tuition fee. An exception to this rule may apply to students who have already completed a degree and are paying statutory tuition fees. In cases such as this, please contact your study programme.

        Minor at Fontys

What if you registered for a minor at Fontys? If so, you should send an original Proof of Paid Tuition Fees from the institution where you pay tuition before the start of your study programme. Please contact your study programme in this respect.

If you have a Bank account number, of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, but you have the nationality of one of the countries included in the EEA*, you will not be able to pay the tuition fee via a digital authorisation, but you will receive a payment agreement from Fontys. This payment agreement will be sent to your Fontys e-mail address and the e-mail address you indicated in Studielink. Please duly complete and sign this payment agreement before the start of your studies and send it to us by post. You will find the address at the bottom of the payment agreement.
It is also possible to scan the completed and signed payment agreement and send it by e-mail to paymentsv@fontys.nl. Please only use this e-mail address for sending the payment agreement and not for sending other enrolment-related documents or questions.

*The countries included in the EEA are as follows: all EU countries, including Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. Switzerland is also regarded as an EEA country.

If you have a Bank account number, of which the bank is not situated in one of the SEPA countries, and you are a national of a country outside the EEA without an address in The Netherlands, then you will receive a payment letter from Fontys via your course department.
If your employer is prepared to pay your Tuition Fees, you will need to confirm the digital authorisation yourself in Studielink, using your own bank account number. In order to then claim reimbursement of these costs from your employer, you may request a proof of payment document from your Course Department. You may then submit this document with your claim for reimbursement to your employer. Fontys does not issue invoices to employers. If this is not sufficient for your employer, please contact your course department.
If your Tuition Fees are to be paid on your behalf of UAF (The Foundation for Refugee Students), you must not submit a digital authorisation in Studielink. In this case, the payment will be arranged directly by the foundation.

When you go to re-enrol, you may choose to reuse the digital direct debit authorisation for a previous academic year for the forthcoming academic year. If you choose this option, you don't need to enter any new payment information. You still have to indicate whether you want to pay in a lump sum or in instalments.

If you don't want to reuse your details, you must enter new payment details in the usual way. Please note that this option is only available if you pay yourself via digital direct debit authorisation.

If you have indicated in Studielink that you are paying yourself via a digital direct debit authorisation, you always have the option to change your account number in Studielink under the Payment tab.

For more information on changing your payment details through Studielink, see the corresponding step-by-step plan at info.studielink.nl/en or the Studielink Q&A.

If you are not yet 18 at the time you want to enter your payment details in Studielink, it is not possible to arrange a digital (direct debit) authorisation. This is because a digital (direct debit) authorisation is a contract with the bank and by law a person under the age of 18 may not enter into a contract with the bank. If this is the case, you have a number of other options for supplying your payment information.

        1. Someone else pays your tuition fees

You indicate in Studielink that someone else is paying your tuition fees. See also the information under the heading Third party to pay Tuition Fees.

2a. Start September: You turn 18 between 15 May and 1 September

Will you be turning 18 between 15 May and 1 September? If so, wait to enter your payment information until after your 18th birthday. You can then arrange a digital (direct debit) authorisation without any problems and still be enrolled in time for the start of the academic year.

2b. Start February: You turn 18 before 1 February?
Will you be turning 18 before 1 February? If so, wait to enter your payment information until after your 18th birthday. You can then arrange a digital (direct debit) authorisation without any problems and still be enrolled in time for the start of the academic year.

        3. Payment by payment agreement

If no one else can pay your tuition fees, you can pay yourself through a payment agreement by indicating in Studielink that your bank is not in a SEPA country. You must then transfer the full tuition fee amount to Fontys before the start of the study programme.

        When to pay tuition fees

        When to pay tuition

        If paying in instalments

Collection will take place in a maximum of ten equal instalments on or around the 26th of the month. Depending upon the processing time required after your enrolment, the direct debit may need to be moved to the following month. If so, the amount outstanding will then be divided and added to the remaining instalments to be executed until and including the June instalment.

Please note: In relation to the paying in instalments facility, an Administration Fee per Academic Year will be payable. This fee will be debited to your account together with the first instalment payable.

If paying the full sum in a single payment

If you commence your studies on 1 September, the direct debit pertaining to your Tuition Fees will be executed on or around 25 September. If you commence your studies after 1 September, the direct debit will be executed on or around the 26th of the month in which you commence your studies.

Using the tuition fees indicator, you can determine which tuition rate applies to you. The amounts mentioned are for the entire year (12 months). If you start mid-term or in February, you will only pay for the number of months you are enrolled.

Please note:If you have submitted your ‘Request for Enrolment’ after the date upon which the last direct debit was to be executed (i.e. on or around 25 June), payment of the full sum in a single payment will be the only option possible.

In all cases (i.e. paying in instalments or in a single payment), prior to the execution of each direct debit, you will be sent a message in which you will be advised of the exact date upon which the direct debit is to be executed.

If the whole amount, or an instalment (only possible when paying via a digital authorisation), cannot be directly debited, a Payment Reminder will be sent to you.
If payment is still not made within the specified term, a payment demand will follow. If the payment demand relates to tuition fees, and payment is still not made within 14 days following the date of the payment demand, Fontys will terminate your registration by the second month following the date of the payment demand. When you receive this payment demand, your Fontys account will be blocked simultaneously. As soon as Fontys has received your payment, your account will be accessible within a few working days.

For all your questions related to enrolment procedures, visa, housing, enrolment for exams, picking up documents etc.

Information about opening a bank account in the Netherlands

This text addresses a few financial aspects typical for the Netherlands, which could make your stay a lot easier.

        Why a Dutch bank account?

A Dutch bank account helps you with your financial needs in The Netherlands during your stay. More specifically it enables you:

        • To pay the annual tuition fee for your study in equal instalments (for instance, per month)

        Please note!

Available student housing is limited, so read this information carefully and take action today to find your accommodation.

If you are unable to secure suitable accommodation by the beginning of the academic year, we strongly advise you not to come to the Netherlands.

Before starting your study at Fontys, you must find suitable housing. Unfortunately, it is not easy for international students to find accommodation in the Netherlands due to the housing crisis. Start your accommodation search early. Please be aware that finding a place to live is your own responsibility.

Although Fontys does not have its own campus dorms, we cooperate with several accommodations agencies and landlords (further on this website referred to as housing agencies). Through such cooperation, Fontys can provide students with guidance in finding accommodation for the first semester or academic year at Fontys. Please note that applying for accommodation through Fontys does not automatically guarantee housing and after the deadline we can't accept new applications.

        Check out these tips

        • Fontys can offer housing for a limited number of students. Fill in the application form before the 15th of June (Fall semester) the 8th of December (Spring semester). The form will be online in April 2023
        • You can find a room through (commercial) housing agencies in the city you want to study in.
        • If you know students that already study at Fontys, make sure to ask for their help.
        • Expand your search. Don’t just look for a room in the city but also in villages nearby.
        • Post a message on social media that you are looking for housing.
        • Beware of scammers. Check our tips to prevent scams.

Although Fontys does not have its own campus dorms, it has established cooperations with a number of different accommodations agencies and landlords (further on this website referred to as housing agency). Through such cooperations, Fontys can provide students with guidance in finding accommodation for the first semester or academic year at Fontys.Unfortunately Fontys can only guarantee housing for a limited number of students. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you keep on trying to find a room yourself and start your search process well in time.

The deadline to hand in your accommodation form is the 15th of June if you start in September or the 8th of December if you start in February. If you are not admissible to the study of your choice, your request for accommodation will be cancelled without charge. Keep us informed if you have found your own accommodation. If you cancel your registration before the deadline, there will be no financial consequences.

Our department International students will do its utmost to find accommodation but . Only after the deadline has passed, Fontys will inform you whether a room will be offered to you.

Please note that it is not possible to view your future accommodation before signing your rental agreement. However, Fontys guarantees minimum quality standards for all accommodation.

        • Read the General information on Accommodation and the Terms and conditions.
        • Fill in and send the accommodation form before the deadline: Fall semester 15 June, Spring semester 8 December.
        • You will receive a confirmation on receipt of the accommodation form
        • Only after the deadline has passed, will Fontys inform you whether a room will be offered to you.
        • You will receive detailed information about the housing agency 4 weeks before start of study at the latest.
        • The Housing agency will contact you.
        • Transfer the required amount of rent + deposit before arrival to housing agency (no payment = no entrance accommodation, but still the obligation to close rental contract)
        • Accommodation is available on the agreed date.
        • You are obliged to accept and pay for the offered room for the whole period. For bachelor students this means one academic year, for exchange student one (or two) semester(s). In the spring semester it is only possible to apply for one semester.
        • Fontys can only guarantee housing for a limited number of students. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you keep on trying to find a room yourself and start your search process well in time.
        • Mail to internationalstudents@fontys.nl for further questions.

As Fontys cooperates with a number of different housing agencies and as each party has different standards, the student rooms available vary widely in terms of appearance, size and rental fees. Although it is not possible for students to select the rooms and/or rental fees of their preference, all accommodation arranged by Fontys satisfies the minimum Quality standards of the accommodation. However, stay on the safe side and count on a rental fee of € 600 per month!

Please take into account that – in relation to guarantees – your housing agency will normally request an advance payment of the following items: Two month terms of rental fees and a refundable deposit, usually to the amount of one month of rental fees, as a security bond in relation to any possible damage to the accommodation. Exchange students sometimes need to pay the full semester in advance.

        Eindhoven

The average fee to rent a standard student room is between EUR 450 and EUR 600 per month. A standard room means you have to share facilities like the shower, toilet and kitchen.

The semi-studio has its own facilities (e.g. own shower and toilet but shared kitchen) The price can vary up to EUR 700.

The independent studio has its private facilities. price is EUR 780. Only for Bachelor students available. It is possible to apply for housing allowance.

Once you have applied to Fontys for accommodation assistance, you will be obliged to accept and pay for the accommodation offered. Unfortunately Fontys can only guarantee housing for a limited number of students. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you keep on trying to find a room yourself. Keep us informed if you have found your own accommodation.

Keep in mind, if you decide to firstly look for your own accommodation, you should take into account that after the deadline (as stipulated in the Accommodation Form), you will no longer be eligible to apply for accommodation assistance via Fontys! If you wish to arrange your own accommodation, without assistance from Fontys, you will be responsible for paying potential additional costs that may be charged by commercial accommodation agencies. A listing of commercial accommodation agencies is included below.

          Overall

Can Fontys help me to find an accommodation?

Due to the housing crisis in the Netherlands, there are not enough student accommodation available. Fontys University of Applied Sciences (Fontys) offers a service to help students find suitable furnished housing for the first period of their studies at Fontys. The deadline to hand in your accommodation form is 15 June if you start in September or the 8 December if you start in February. Fontys can only guarantee housing for a limited number of students, so in the meantime it is important to search for an accommodation by yourself. If you find a place by yourself please inform us by writing an email to internationalstudents@fontys.nl .

When will I be informed about the details of my accommodation arranged by Fontys?

Only after the deadline has passed, Fontys will inform you whether a room will be offered to you. No later than three weeks before the start of your study at Fontys, we will inform you about the housing agency you have been assigned to. We will inform you about the procedure to book the room and at what date the room will be available. In some cases, an accommodation agency will issue a student with a login account to give access to their booking system, via which it will be possible for the student to select from the range of accommodation available via the agency’s website. In other cases, an accommodation agency will contact the student to inform him/her of the specific accommodation available.
In August the accommodation will be available as from 2-3 weeks prior to your commencement of studies at Fontys. In January/February the accommodation will be available just a few days before the start of your studies.

When will I be informed in case Fontys can not help me finding a room?

Although our department International students will do its utmost to find accommodation for everyone, we do not have enough rooms to offer to all new students. Your application will be processed on a first come first served basis and a complete enrolment process. So mind the deadlines. If Fontys doesn't have a room available for you, you will be informed ultimately in the last week of June/December.

What happens if I am not admissible to the study?

If you are not admissible to the study of your choice, your request for accommodation will be cancelled without charge. Please inform us by writing an email to internationalstudents@fontys.nl .

Will I be able to share accommodation with a friend?

No, it is not possible to share a room or a studio with a friend. But at the bottom of the accommodation form, you may submit your ‘preference’ to be in the same accommodation with a certain person. We cannot guarantee that your preferences will be met, but we will certainly try to meet your request. With regard to the range of accommodation that we have available, please note that all accommodation is offered on a ‘first in, first served’ basis.

I submitted an Accommodation Form to Fontys, but then I found my own accommodation. Can I cancel my application for accommodation assistance with Fontys?

You can cancel the application only BEFORE you have been assigned to an accommodation. Please send an email to internationalstudents@fontys.nl to cancel the application. If you cancel the accommodation after you have been assigned to an agency, the accommodation will stay empty and you would still have to pay for rent.

After I have been assigned to an accommodation agency, can I switch to another accommodation agency?

No, you cannot switch to another accommodation agency. When we have assigned all students to their accommodation agencies, all available rooms will be allocated to those students. Therefore, switching to another accommodation agency is not possible.

As I will be arriving a few weeks after the commencement date of my rental contract, will I have to pay for the days during which I have not yet occupied my room?

Yes, you will have to pay for all days as from the commencement of your rental contract, which has a fixed commencement date. By signing the Accommodation Form, you declare that you will accept and pay for a room as from a specified date. If you decide to arrive at a later date, you will still be obliged to pay the rental fee as from the commencement date of the rental contract.

I will arrive a few days before my rental contract commences. Will I be able to occupy my accommodation earlier than scheduled?

No, your accommodation will not available prior to the agreed commencement date of your rental contract. If you need a place to stay until that date, you will need to book a room at a hotel, or a B&B (Bed & Breakfast). For further information, please refer to the section, Commercial housing agencies and other parties.

When I have arrived, if I discover that I do not like my room, will I be able to switch to another room?

No, unless your room does not meet the requirements.

If I have a problem with my accommodation agency/landlord, will Fontys solve this for me?

Legally, Fontys will not be one of the parties to the rental contract, which will be between you and the accommodation agency. Therefore, any complaints and problems concerning your accommodation should be reported to your accommodation agency/landlord. However, if your problem is not resolved, or if you need a helping hand, you may contact a Fontys Accommodation Officer and he/she will try to provide you with appropriate advice/assistance.

May I leave my accommodation prior to the termination date of my rental contract?

No, you may not vacate your accommodation prior to the agreed termination date of your rental contract. As you have signed a rental contract, you will be responsible for the payment of the rental fee associated with your accommodation. However, if you pay the rental fees in full up to and including the agreed termination date, of course, you will be able to vacate your accommodation.

What will happen if I am unable to pay my rent?

When you apply for accommodation assistance via Fontys, you are required to sign in agreement to a maximum monthly rental. As such, we will assume that you are fully aware, in advance, of the expenses associated with renting accommodation. Therefore, you will remain responsible for the monthly payment of your rental fees.

Can I select my preferred accommodation?

In general, it is not possible to select the specific accommodation of your choice. Fontys will decide which student will be assigned to which accommodation agency. However, most accommodation agencies have software available that will allow a student to ‘view’ a student room before accepting it.

What will be in my room and what should I bring?

Your room will have certain characteristics, which have been listed under the section, quality standards of the accommodation. Items that you may wish to bring with you, or purchase locally, would include your personal belongings, towels, soap and detergent, food, toilet paper, et cetera.

What happens after the first semester/ academic year?

If you are staying longer than one academic year you need to find an accommodation on your own. Start searching on time. Do not forget to inform the municipality about your new address.
If you are an exchange student you will probably leave the Netherlands after a semester. You need to deregister at the municipality. Note: The landlord of your room can ask you for proof of deregistration at the municipality as a condition to get your deposit back.

My question is not listed here. Whom can I contact for further assistance?

If the answer to your question is not included here, please do not hesitate to contact Team International Students by e-mail, via internationalstudents@fontys.nl.

          •       To arrange

Things you need to arrange before living and studying in the Netherlands

            Healthcare in the Netherlands

Healthcare in the Netherlands ranks amongst the best in the world, giving people access to the most advanced treatments and preventative care. Some things, however, may be arranged in a different way than you are used to.

The biggest difference will be the central role of the General Practitioner (GP), in Dutch called the huisarts.

Your GP is the key to the Dutch world of medicine. The GP treats patients for basic problems and can answer most of your general health questions. (S)he will also perform, for example, standard gynecological or pediatric examinations. Your GP will also serve as your link to most other services, such as hospitalization, specialists, home nursing midwifery and physiotherapy. If you call the GP’s office to make an appointment, the GP’s assistant will ask questions to determine the urgency of your situation. The GP’s assistant is a professional and has an obligation of secrecy. Asking questions is done only to have the patient and the doctor better prepared, to suggest alternatives, like a consultation by phone or video, or in some cases, to check if more immediate action is required. If your GP cannot diagnose or treat a problem (s)he will refer you to a specialist. Your GP will usually provide you a letter of referral to be given to the specialist, whom you in turn will call for an appointment. You can however, visit other primary care providers, such as a midwife, physiotherapist or dentist without a referral from your GP.

Most medicines require a prescription from your GP after a personal consultation, since they can be potentially harmful. However, after a consultation, it is possible you will receive a diagnosis but no medication. Dutch physicians believe it is often best to let an illness run its course without expensive and potentially dangerous tests and medication.

It is strongly recommended to register with a GP in your area as soon as you are settled.

Note: You are obliged to be health insured in the Netherlands.

            Important links

            Healthcare insurance

By law, you must have an adequate healthcare insurance, to make sure that you are properly insured during your stay. The type of healthcare insurance you need depends on your personal situation. European (EEA) students should ask their own health insurance provider if the existing health insurance policy offers sufficient coverage for medical expenses in the Netherlands. You have to complete your insurance package to cover liability and repatriation. Students from Europe having an EHIC card have to check if this insurance will be valid the entire periode of the stay abroad. This is often not the case.

Fontys recommends the international student-minded health insurance company InsureToStudy One of the many advantages (different to other companies) is that you don't need to declare the costs of your GP visit, because the invoice will be send directly to the insurance. Besides that ITS also reimburses if a student consults a digital doctor.

As a Fontys student you will get a discount!
This insurance covers healthcare, extraordinary costs, repatriation, liability, accidents, legal aid and baggage & household goods. This offer is accessible for all international Fontys students who wish to apply for this insurance or want to change their current insurance. If you apply through this link you will receive the discount automatically. You have to fill in the institution code "FONTYSITS" and you have to use your @student.fontys.nl email address. If you have questions about the insurance you can contact insureToStudy through mail: info@insuretostudy.com or call 0031 70 2051860.

New Non European students are, at least for their first year, obliged to take out the InsureToStudy Master Plan+ insurance which is part of the Fontys Visa procedure.
The Master Plan + insurance offers a very comprehensive coverage relative to the Master Plan insurance. The Master Plan + insurance includes conditions which already exists prior to applying for this insurance, for instance asthma, diabetes, eczema, migraines, but also disadvantages have continued from previous operations. You can even apply for this insurance if you think you're suffering from the coronavirus. The Master Plan + insurance can be applied for by yourself, only by this link.

The Master Plan does not cover existing conditions and disadvantages, this concerns the costs that were to be reasonably expected at the start of the insurance.

Note: You are not allowed to take out a public Dutch health insurance if you are in the Netherlands for study purposes only.

If you cause an accident and someone is injured or if you damage someone's property, you are responsible for paying all the costs of the accident. You might, for example, break something in your rented room. Or, on a more serious note, you might cause a road accident. Accidents like these can be very expensive. You are therefore strongly advised to take out a good liability insurance policy, which will cover the costs in many cases.

Repatriation means returning to your home country. If anything (serious illness or accident) happens to you in The Netherlands, your insurance should cover the costs of repatriation of yourself (e.g. for treatment required in your home country), or having your parents travel to join you here. Repatriation is also covered for family member in the 1st and 2nd degree by death or very serious illness It would be wise to have an insurance policy covering these costs.

Be sure to extend your insurance in time. If your current insurance is not InsureToStudy and you want to profit the benefits of the ITS insurance you can easy change your insurance.

            Contact ITS

            WhatsApp: +316 36264401
            Phone: +3170 2051860

If you have a student job or a paid internship you are obliged to take out a Dutch basic healthcare insurance. If you already have an InsureToStudy insurance (or if you are willing to take out one), you can profit a very low priced Dutch basic healthcare insurance combination with Hollandzorg.

            Apply here for Hollandzorg.

            Start your preparations early

The Fontys University of Applied Sciences has an agreement with the Dutch Immigration & Naturalisation Service (the ‘IND’) to apply for Entry Visas and Residence Permits on behalf of its students. The required procedure will be commenced before you travel to the Netherlands. Although the ‘IND’ generally processes applications within two-three weeks, we recommend that you start the process early, i.e. approximately three months before you plan to enter the Netherlands, as it may take some time for you to gather all of the required documentation. You will find more information in this brochure: Coming to study in the Netherlands.

To enter the Netherlands for the purpose of studying, you may require a visa and/or a residence permit, depending on the following factors

            • Your nationality, i.e. as stated in your passport.
            • The duration of your stay, i.e. for less or more than three months.
            • The purpose of your stay, i.e. we assume that you intend coming to the Netherlands to study, or for a preparatory year.

Entry Visa / Authorisation for Temporary Stay (‘MVV’)

All non-EU/EEA students entering the Netherlands will require an Entry Visa (‘MVV’), except nationals from Australia, Canada, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, South Korea, the UK, the USA and Vatican City State. This Entry Visa is a sticker that is placed in your passport and is issued by the Dutch embassy or consulate in your country of origin.

Additional conditions for students of the following nationalities:

Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Cameroon and Nigeria.

Students of these nationalities have to be aware they have to transfer the full refundable amount of the living expenses to the bank account of Fontys. Proof by financial documents you have access to this amount will not be accepted.

If you are staying in the Netherlands for more than four months you will need to go to the city council and register as a new resident of the town where you are living. Registration regulations may vary from one council to another.

When registering with your local council, you are automatically issued a BSN. BSN is short for Burger Service Nummer, which translates as ‘citizen service number’. The BSN is equivalent to a social security number: a unique registration number for every citizen, used in contacts with any government service. Various people may ask for your BSN. If you have a job, your employer will need to know your BSN. When you open a bank account the bank will also ask for your BSN.

Some study departments arrange the appointment for international students. Please check with your study department if you need to make the appointment yourself or if they will arrange it for you.

Bring the following documents to the appointment

            • A valid passport
            • Original birth certificate or original legalised true copy of the birth certificate (not older than six months). If your birth certificate was not issued in the Dutch, English, French or German language, you will also need to submit a sworn translation. Additional stamps, from the government of the country which issued the birth certificate, might be required. In order to confirm which legalisation you are required to have, you must contact the Dutch Embassy or Consulate in your own country. Please check https://www.netherlandsandyou.nl to find details of your local Embassy or Consulate
            • Proof of civil status only in case you are married, divorced or a widow(er). In Venlo it’s always necessary to bring a proof of civil status
            • Rental agreement for your room in the Netherlands
            • Declaration of acceptance by Fontys University of Applied Sciences
            • Print of the approval letter of the Dutch Immigration Service (IND) if applicable

If you are going to change your address or move to another city do not forget to inform the municipality. If your study period ends and you want to leave the Netherlands, you have to deregister.

Note: The landlord of your room can ask you for proof of deregistration at the municipality as a condition to get your deposit back.

Extra information for students from China

Chinese students are required to bring the following documents in addition:

                • Legalized notarized declaration* which includes family name, given names, date of birth, place of birth, name of father and name of mother and a notarized certified true copy of the document or documents on which the notary has based his statement regarding the birth and the data of the parents.

                Documents that will be accepted:

                • Hukou of the parents in which the birth of the child is registered and a declaration of the hospital which explicitly states that this statement can be used for the registration of the birth in the Hukou registry;
                • A statement from the Public Security Bureau where the requested data prove out;
                • Notarized certified copy of the updated and complete Hukou of the child itself.
This should be done as soon as possible, as the legalisation process can take a number of months.

                Work permit

If you want to work during your studies while staying in the Netherlands, there are some things to keep in mind.

Are you from the EU/EEA or Switzerland? If you are from the EU/EEA or Switzerland you are free to work without restrictions. You do not need a work permit and there are no restrictions regarding working hours.

Are you from outside Europe? If you are not from the EU/EEA or Switzerland, there are some restrictions if you want to work alongside your studies. You can either work for a maximum of 16 hours a week during the year, or you can work fulltime during the months of June, July and August, but only with a work permit.

Your employer has to apply for your work permit (Tewerkstellingsvergunning or short the TWV) at least 5 weeks prior to the start of your employment. The application is free of charge. You cannot apply for the permit yourself. The organization that issues work permits is called the Employee Insurance Agency (UWV). The work permit application must be accompanied by a copy of your residence permit for study purposes and a statement from your education institution confirming that you are enrolled as a student at that institution.

In the case of students seeking to work part-time alongside their studies, there is a simplified application procedure whereby the UWV does not have to perform all the checks stipulated in the Foreign Nationals Employment Act (Wet arbeid vreemdelingen, WAV). Employers are not always aware of this simplified procedure and may therefore be wary about applying for a work permit. There is no need for this, however.

This is the website (wwww.werk.nl) for your employer to apply for your work permit as a work student.

The Inspectorate SZW carries out inspections to check whether work permits were issued. If they were not issued this constitutes illegal employment, which is a violation of the Foreign Nationals Employment Act and punishable with severe fines for your employer and the risk for you to lose your residence permit.

Note: As soon as you have a (part-time) job, you are required to have a Dutch public health insurance

In addition to your studies, you are allowed to work in the Netherlands as a self employed individual, as long as you continue to meet the requirements for your residence permit for study. There is no limit to the amount of hours that you are allowed to work as a self employed individual. Also, you do not need a working permit (TWV).

You do need to register your company in the Dutch Chamber of Commerce (Kamer van Koophandel). You need to pay taxes yourself. Whether it is compulsory for you to take out Dutch public healthcare insurance depends on your situation. To find out,  you can undergo a Wlz review carried out by the SVB.

The employer does not need to apply for a work permit for you. The employer must, however, be able to present an internship agreement to the Labour Inspectorate, upon request.

You are legally obliged to sign an internship agreement with your higher education institution and internship employer. We strongly advise you to use the standard internship agreement for non-EU-EEA students drawn up by Nuffic in consultation with the Dutch government.

student trainee agreement (three party contract)

Note: If you are doing an internship for which you are paid at least as much as the Dutch minimum wage, you are subject to compulsory insurance under the Wlz scheme. Check this explanation of the minimum wage. If you receive expenses this will also count as remuneration for your internship. Contact the SVB (Sociale Verzekeringsbank), which is the organisation that implements national insurance schemes in the Netherlands and start the Wlz assessment when you are in doubt.

Are you a talented student with a non-EEA nationality and do you wish to study in the Netherlands at Fontys University of Applied Sciences?

There are scholarships available for Non-EU / Non-EEA students that want to come to the Netherlands for their studies.

You might also be eligible for other scholarships not provided by Fontys. These can be found on Grantfinder.nl

                        Starting your studies

When starting your studies at Fontys, it is nice to know when we expect to meet you on campus for the first time and what you will experience in the first months at Industrial Engineering and Management.

For a successful enrollment it is necessary that you come to Nexus, in Eindhoven in person, to show your original diploma from your previous education with corresponding list of marks. This is an important condition to complete your enrollment. If you do not manage to come to Eindhoven on this date or at least before the start of your study, your enrollment will be terminated.

Everyone who is admitted will get a personal invitation with the details by e-mail. For last-minute admission questions please contact us:

                        Culture Shower

In the first week you will start with a culture shower.

                        What is it about?

A metaphor for an immersion, get to know Industrial Engineering & Management: the work, the study and the world; by experiencing and researching (by) yourself.

The goal is to enable you to

                        • create your own view and understanding of Industrial Engineering and Management
                        • work in teams
                        • learn to deal with uncertainty
                        • creatively (re)imagine and transfer insights to others
                        • reflect individually on what you've learned

                        Necessities for this first day

                        • notebook
                        • multiple colours (pencil or marker)
                        • laptop/tablet/telephone
                        • a charger for the devices you're bringing
                        • something to drink and to eat
                        • earplugs/headphones
                        • most importantly: good spirit!

Company experience in the first year? Well, yes that's exactly what IEM has in store for you! When joining IEM you must be prepared for a year full of interesting assignments and projects directly connected with real life. Right after your introduction week, probably the most fun week of the whole year, you go straight into the culture shower week, and you must already do an assignment. After your first week of the study, you will get your first credit (ECT). Following this assignment is the first project for the year, which if you start in September is all about the technical part of the study. You pick an appliance, take it apart and improve a part you think could use improving. You work with SolidWorks, a drawing software, to create the new and improved appliance and at the end of week 8 you present it in front of your stakeholders.

If you want to plan holidays or other activities, it is useful to know when there are no classes.

                                        Study materials

Both on and off campus you will use your computer a lot. For some specific activities we have so-called innovationlabs: Gameslab, Securitylab, Accenturelab, Multimedia kitchen and Virtual Reality lab. You can work there with advanced, state of the art technology. Besides that, every student is obliged to have and to use their own laptop. We made sure we have:

                                        • A lot of power sockets to plug in your laptop;
                                        • Most of the needed software applications, available for free through surfspot.nl (see information below);
                                        • Many network connections so you can use a network cable for fast internet connection;
                                        • Wireless internet throughout the whole building.

                                        Laptop requirements

At the start or your studies any working laptop will do. You can use your own laptop if you already have one. When you need to buy one, you can buy any laptop at this moment. What we do ask of you, is to use Windows and your OS is in English. Next to that, you need to be able to run 'Visual Studio' – if not on your laptop, virtual or on a terminal server will do as well. Because of this, we advise you to have a laptop with enough space on the hard drive.

                                        Additional costs

It is possible that you will need some small computer supplies or hardware after you started your study programme. Most of the time, this will only be a small amount of money.

                                        Software deals for education

SURFspot is the ultimate non-profit ICT online store. SURFspot offers an educational discount on software, hardware and online educational resources.

                                        So how does it work?

                                      •   Starting your studies
When starting your studies at Fontys, it is nice to know when we expect to meet you on campus for the first time and what you will experience in the first months at Fontys ICT in Eindhoven.

For a successful enrollment it is necessary that you come to Eindhoven on Friday January 27th in person to show your original diploma from your previous education with the corresponding list of marks. This is an important condition to complete your enrollment. All international students will get an invitation by email for this Diploma-check day. If you do not manage to come to Eindhoven on this particular date, your enrollment will be terminated. In that case, you could reapply for September 2023.

International bachelor students only (so no exchange students and no national Dutch students) will be expected at school for their diploma-check and information about other administrative matters, such as getting settled in Eindhoven, appointment with the municipality, health matters, etc.

During diploma check you will be asked to show:

This text addresses a few financial aspects typical for the Netherlands, which could make your stay a lot easier.

                                        Why a Dutch bank account?

A Dutch bank account helps you with your financial needs in The Netherlands during your stay. More specifically it enables you:

                                        • The bank card enables use of ATMs and payments all over the world
                                        • Easy internet banking, which is included in your bank account application.

                                                • Hukou of the parents in which the birth of the child is registered and a declaration of the hospital which explicitly states that this statement can be used for the registration of the birth in the Hukou registry;
                                                • A statement from the Public Security Bureau where the requested data prove out;
                                                • Notarized certified copy of the updated and complete Hukou of the child itself.
