NSE: studenten positief over onderwijs bij Fontys

Op woensdag 23 juni publiceerde Studiekeuze123 de resultaten van de Nationale Studenten Enquête (NSE) 2021. De NSE is een jaarlijks onderzoek onder alle studenten in het hoger onderwijs. Hoewel het een bijzonder jaar was met veel onderwijs op afstand, zijn Fontys-studenten positief over hun opleiding.
Een percentage van 68% van de Fontys-respondenten is (zeer) tevreden over hun opleiding bij Fontys. Dit blijkt uit de jaarlijkse Nationale Studenten Enquête (NSE), die door 42% van de Fontys-studenten is ingevuld. Ruim 71% van hen zou ook opnieuw kiezen voor de opleiding. De NSE-resultaten van Fontys zijn hiermee sterk vergelijkbaar met het landelijke beeld en vergelijkbare hogescholen.
Tevredenheid
Fontys-studenten zijn met een gemiddelde van 3,67 (op een vijf-puntschaal) een fractie meer tevreden over hun opleiding in het algemeen dan het landelijk gemiddelde van 3,65. Wel is de algemene tevredenheid gedaald ten opzichte van 2018: voor Fontys was het gemiddelde toen 3,85. Deze daling is wel in lijn met het landelijke beeld (van 3,84 naar 3,65) en de benchmarkinstellingen. De Fontys-studenten geven een 4,01 (op een schaal van vijf) voor de sfeer op de opleiding.
Studiebegeleiding en stages
Fontys-studenten geven aan het afgelopen jaar minder vaak stage te hebben gelopen. Toch is de tevredenheid op dit thema iets toegenomen ten opzichte van 2018. Ongeveer de helft van de Fontys-studenten geeft aan studiebegeleiding te hebben gehad. Twee derde van de studenten is hierover (zeer) tevreden.
NSE in coronatijd
De NSE wordt jaarlijks georganiseerd door Stichting Studiekeuze123 in opdracht van het ministerie van OCW. Voor de NSE 2021 is gebruik gemaakt van een aangepaste vragenlijst. Om die reden zijn vergelijkingen met eerdere enquêtejaren niet voor alle vragen mogelijk. De nieuwe vragenlijst bestaat uit een vaste kern van vragen en een zogenoemde ‘flexibele schil’ waaruit instellingen vragenblokken konden kiezen. In de NSE 2021 is bij de vragen die behoren tot de vaste kern niet specifiek aandacht besteed aan de invloed van de coronamaatregelen. Wel heeft Fontys extra aandacht besteed aan de ervaringen en het welzijn van studenten tijdens corona, door eigen onderzoek naar deze onderwerpen te doen.
In een eerste reactie geeft Maurice Limmen, voorzitter van de Vereniging Hogescholen, aan dat de hogescholen best trots op zichzelf mogen zijn. ‘Het is mooi om te zien dat studenten, ondanks een zwaar coronajaar met veel online onderwijs, toch positief zijn over hun opleiding. Daar is door hogescholen heel hard aan gewerkt.’
Vertrouwen
Ook het College van Bestuur van Fontys noemt de uitkomst van de NSE ‘positief’. ‘Na anderhalf jaar coronacrisis – met alle ingrijpende gevolgen voor ons onderwijs, onze studenten en onze docenten van dien – wijkt het resultaat niet of nauwelijks af van dat in 2018’, aldus bestuursvoorzitter Joep Houterman. ‘Waar we zeer blij mee zijn, is de gestegen tevredenheid van studenten over hun stages. Het zijn er natuurlijk minder geweest dan in andere jaren, maar daar waar de stages doorgang vonden, steeg de waardering. Voor een hogeschool, met praktijkgerichte beroepsopleidingen en de nauwe band met het werkveld, is dat natuurlijk een mooie opsteker. En de 4,01 die de studenten geven voor de sfeer op hun opleiding, is natuurlijk een prachtig cijfer!’
Tegelijk zijn er ook punten waar Fontys in de NSE wat minder uit de verf komt. Die zitten vooral in de vragenthema’s waar Fontys zelf voor gekozen heeft (naast de standaard vragenlijst voor iedere hogeschool). Houterman: ‘Reflectie en flexibiliteit scoren iets minder. Dat laatste thema is een van onze speerpunten in de strategie voor de periode tot 2025, dus daar zullen we de komende jaren sowieso sterk op focussen.’
Over het geheel genomen bevestigt de NSE het beeld dat Houterman van de organisatie Fontys heeft gekregen in de corona-pandemie. ‘Mijn vertrouwen in de organisatie is echt heel groot. Sinds maart 2020 is er zoveel veerkracht, teamgeest en creativiteit aan de dag gelegd; het maakt me echt trots om aan deze hogeschool leiding te geven.’

NSS: students positive about education at Fontys
On Wednesday, June 23, Studiekeuze123 published the results of the National Student Survey (NSS) 2021. The NSS is an annual survey among all students in higher education. Although it was a special year with a lot of distance education, Fontys students are positive about their studies.
A percentage of 68% of Fontys respondents are (very) satisfied with their studies at Fontys. This is evident from the annual National Student Survey (NSS), which was completed by 42% of Fontys students. Over 71% of them would also choose the study again. The NSS results of Fontys are very similar to the national picture and to those of comparable universities of applied sciences.
Satisfaction
With an average of 3.67 (on a five-point scale), Fontys students are a fraction more satisfied with their study program in general than the national average of 3.65. However, the general satisfaction has decreased compared to the national average of 3.67. However, overall satisfaction has decreased compared to 2018: for Fontys the average was then 3.85. This decrease is in line with the national picture (from 3.84 to 3.65) and the benchmark institutions. The Fontys students give a 4.01 (on a scale of five) for the atmosphere on the study program.
Study guidance and internships
Fontys students indicate that they have done less internships in the past year. Nevertheless, satisfaction on this theme has increased slightly compared to 2018. About half of the Fontys students say they received study guidance. Two thirds of the students are (very) satisfied about this.
NSS in coronation time
The NSS is organized annually by the Studiekeuze123 Foundation on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. For the NSS 2021, a modified questionnaire was used. For this reason, comparisons with previous survey years are not possible for all questions. The new questionnaire consists of a fixed core of questions and a so-called 'flexible shell' from which institutions could choose question blocks. In the NSS 2021, the questions belonging to the fixed core did not pay specific attention to the influence of the corona measures. However, Fontys did pay extra attention to the experiences and well-being of students during corona by conducting its own research into these topics.
In an initial reaction, Maurice Limmen, president of the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences, says that the universities of applied sciences can be quite proud of themselves. It is nice to see that students, despite a heavy corona year with a lot of online education, are still positive about their study. Colleges have worked very hard on that.'
Confidence
The Executive Board of Fontys also calls the outcome of the NSS 'positive'. 'After one and a half years of coronacrisis - with all the far-reaching consequences for our education, our students and our teachers that this entails - the result does not differ much, if at all, from that in 2018,' says Board Chairman Joep Houterman. 'What we are very pleased about is the increased satisfaction of students with their internships. Of course, there were fewer than in other years, but where the internships took place, the appreciation rose. For a university of applied sciences with practical vocational training and close ties to the professional field, that is of course a great boost. And the 4.01 the students give for the atmosphere on their course is of course a wonderful figure!
At the same time, there are also points where Fontys does not stand out as much in the NSS. These are mainly in the questionnaires that Fontys has chosen for itself (in addition to the standard questionnaire for every university of applied sciences). Houterman: 'Reflection and flexibility score slightly lower. The latter theme is one of our focal points in the strategy for the period up to 2025, so we will be focusing strongly on it in the coming years anyway.'
Overall, the NSS confirms the picture Houterman has of the Fontys organization in the corona pandemic. 'My confidence in the organization is really very high. Since March 2020, there has been so much resilience, team spirit and creativity; it makes me really proud to lead this college.'
