In Memoriam John Wooter
On Wednesday 24 August we received the sad news that our beloved colleague and teacher John Wooter (Paramaribo, 1964) had died from a heart attack. He had been struggling with health problems for some time and was seriously ill lately.
John had been successfully active in the dance world since 1980 as a dancer, dance teacher, choreographer and theater maker, particularly in the urban dance circuit. He was trained as a dancer at the Dance Academy in Tilburg, the Rotterdam Dance Academy and the Mudra school of Maurice Béjart. At the age of 16 John took his first steps in Jazz dance and gradually he made his passion his profession.
John was associated with our Dance Academy for more than ten years. First as a jazz teacher and later he taught Physical Dynamics; a program that he developed himself based on research into 'the new dance body'. It incorporates elements and techniques from contemporary dance such as breakdance, capoeira, acrobatics and gymnastics. He was also involved in auditions, assessments and liked to think about educational development. John was someone who knew how to inspire and motivate everyone. You would often run into him in the corridors, usually involved in conversations with colleagues and students. He was always full of innovative ideas and he loved to share them.
John also taught at ArtEZ, at the dance teacher training program, and in the past also at the other dance training programs in the Netherlands. But 'his' Dance Academy in Tilburg (the colleagues and especially the students) had a special place in his heart. He felt at home with us and even during the last six months, a period which was very difficult for him, he regularly took the train to Tilburg. Just to feel that natural, warm connection again. He loved it. He made sure he looked his best at every visit and liked to show off his new wardrobe, always one size less. He then fished for compliments; in his own words, he was ‘still vain’.
He forced himself to be positive and cheerful, because he wanted to teach students that inner strength is important. Especially when things are not going well for a while. He wanted to be an example. But the sadness for what happened to him could suddenly overwhelm him. And at times there was also the fear that one day he would suddenly no longer be there.
As a dedicated dancer, John found it hard to accept that his body was failing him. A body that he had proudly cherished and well-maintained all his life. In the hospital, the staff regularly asked him to show what he taught as a 'dance teacher'. He then proudly demonstrated his skills to a loud applause. During the last period, he gave in to a heavy treatment and did not choose for a milder variant. As a dancer, he was used to exceeding his pain threshold whenever necessary.
John was a warm, dear colleague, an involved and dedicated teacher and a wonderful and special human being. We, students and alumni will miss him dearly.

Woensdag 24 augustus bereikte ons het trieste bericht dat onze geliefde collega en docent John Wooter (Paramaribo, 1964) aan een hartstilstand is overleden. Hij kampte al langer met gezondheidsklachten en was de laatste tijd ernstig ziek.
John was sinds 1980 met succes actief in de danswereld als danser, dansdocent, choreograaf en theatermaker en dat met name in het urban danscircuit. Hij is opgeleid als danser aan de dansacademie te Tilburg, de Rotterdamse Dansacademie en de Mudra-school van Maurice Béjart. Als 16-jarige zette John zijn eerste Jazz-dansstappen en gaandeweg heeft hij van zijn passie zijn beroep gemaakt.
John was ruim tien jaar aan onze Dance Academy verbonden. Eerst als jazz-docent en later gaf hij Physical Dynamics; een vak dat hij zelf ontwikkelde op basis van een onderzoek naar ‘het nieuwe danslijf’. Er zijn elementen en technieken uit de hedendaagse dans in verweven zoals breakdance, capoeira, acrobatiek en turnen. Ook was hij betrokken bij audities, assessments en dacht hij graag mee over onderwijsontwikkeling. John was iemand die iedereen wist te inspireren en te motiveren. Vaak kwam je hem in de wandelgangen tegen, meestal betrokken in gesprekken met collega’s en studenten. Hij zat altijd vol innovatieve ideeën en hij deelde ze graag.
John gaf ook les bij ArtEZ, bij de opleiding docent dans, en in het verleden ook bij de andere dansopleidingen in het land. Maar ‘zijn’ opleiding in Tilburg (de collega’s maar vooral ook de studenten) had een bijzonder plekje in zijn hart. Hij voelde zich thuis bij ons en zelfs tijdens het laatste half jaar, een periode die erg zwaar voor hem was, kwam hij geregeld met de trein naar Tilburg. Gewoon om weer die vanzelfsprekende, warme verbondenheid te voelen. Dat deed hem goed. Hij zorgde bij elk bezoek dat hij er top uitzag en showde graag zijn nieuwe garderobe, steeds een maatje minder. Hij viste dan naar complimenten, naar eigen zeggen was hij ‘nog steeds ijdel’.
Hij forceerde zichzelf ook om positief en vrolijk te zijn, omdat hij studenten wilde meegeven dat ínnerlijke kracht van belang is. Zeker als het een periode niet mee zit. Hij wilde daarin een voorbeeld zijn. Maar het verdriet om wat hem overkwam, kon hem plotseling wel overvallen. En bij tijd en wijle was er ook de angst om er op een dag ineens niet meer te zijn.
Als toegewijd danser kon John maar moeilijk accepteren dat zijn lijf hem in de steek liet. Een lichaam dat hij zijn hele leven trots heeft gekoesterd en goed heeft onderhouden. In het ziekenhuis vroeg het personeel hem geregeld om te laten zien waarin hij als ‘dansleraar’ dan les gaf. Trots demonstreerde hij dan zijn kunnen met een luid applaus als gevolg. Hij gaf zich de laatste periode over aan een zware behandeling en koos niet voor een mildere variant. Omdat hij als danser nou eenmaal gewend was om zijn pijngrens, waar nodig, te overschrijden.
John was een warme, lieve collega, een betrokken en toegewijde docent en een prachtig en bijzonder mens. Wij, studenten en alumni gaan hem heel erg missen.
