Fontys ondertekent manifest seksueel geweld Amnesty International
Een veilig gevoel is voor studenten èn medewerkers van Fontys een fundamenteel recht

Op donderdag 27 januari ondertekende de voorzitter van het college van bestuur Joep Houterman namens Fontys het door Amnesty International opgestelde manifest tegen seksueel geweld. Namens Amnesty International ondertekende Steffie de Wit, vertegenwoordiger in de regio Eindhoven en tevens student Social Work bij Fontys. Sociale veiligheid is een thema dat meer dan ooit actueel is, onze aandacht vraagt en al langer bij Fontys op de agenda staat.
Een veilig gevoel is voor studenten èn medewerkers van Fontys Hogescholen een fundamenteel recht. Het is aan ons als kennisinstelling om een veilig leerklimaat te realiseren. Alleen in een veilig klimaat komen de talenten van onze studenten en medewerkers tot hun recht en hebben zij een fijne tijd bij Fontys. Met de ondertekening committeert Fontys zich aan de afspraak zich in te zetten voor het bestrijden en bespreekbaar maken van seksueel geweld, bij studenten en medewerkers.
Amnesty voert campagne om ervoor te zorgen dat het in Nederland de norm is dat seks gebaseerd is op gelijkwaardigheid, vrijwilligheid en instemming. Uit recent landelijk onderzoek uitgevoerd door Amnesty blijkt dat ook 1 op de 10 studenten te maken hebben gehad met een vorm van grensoverschrijdend seksueel gedrag.
De veiligheid van onze studenten wordt vergroot wanneer onze studenten vertrouwen hebben in de mensen waar zij contact mee kunnen zoeken om hun verhaal over persoonlijk omstandigheden te delen. Dat zijn studentcoaches, docenten, andere medewerkers van de opleiding, de vertrouwenspersoon of tweedelijns begeleiding. Om ervoor te zorgen dat deze mensen meer bewust worden van deze problematiek, signalen herkennen en de studenten indien nodig op de juiste manier kunnen doorverwijzen’, zal de komende maanden het thema extra aandacht krijgen.
Sociale veiligheid
Coördinator van Team Vertrouwenspersonen, José Schardijn ging bij de ondertekening kort in op de aanpak van Fontys. Alle studenten en medewerkers binnen Fontys hebben recht op een veilige studeer- en werkplek, waar we met respect met elkaar omgaan. Helaas kan het gebeuren dat er situaties voorkomen die als onveilig ervaren worden. Het kan gaan om ongewenste gedragingen die te maken hebben met seksuele intimidatie of geweld, pesten, uitsluiting of discriminatie. Het is het belangrijk dat er snel op deze ervaringen en situaties gereageerd wordt.
José Schardijn licht toe hoe Team Vertrouwenspersonen instituten en diensten helpt om een veilige studeer-en werkplek binnen Fontys te versterken en bewustwording te creëren. Dit doen zij onder andere door:
- Het bieden van voorlichting over wat ongewenst gedrag is, hoe het kan ontstaan en hoe hier mee om te gaan.
- Het ondersteunen en bieden van handvatten voor de studentcoach in het opvangen van studenten die met onveilige situaties te maken hebben.
- Daarnaast zijn de Vertrouwenspersonen er voor individuele studenten en medewerkers van Fontys.
Het is van belang dat we ervaringen samen bespreken en samen delen binnen Fontys, zodat iedereen zich meer bewust wordt en het gesprek over deze gevoelige thema’s aan gaat. Kortom : sociale veiligheid is iets van ons allemaal: studenten en medewerkers!

Fontys helpt / helps voor studenten
Op Fontys helpt en de Engelse variant Fontys helps is informatie te vinden over hoe Fontys helpt als zij zich niet veilig voelen of bij vragen twijfels en zorgen. De studentcoach is het eerste aanspreekpunt voor de student. Echter ze kunnen ook rechtstreeks terecht bij de vertrouwenspersoon, decaan of psycholoog.
Infopunt veiligheid voor alle medewerkers
Ook voor medewerkers is het belangrijk om te weten waar ze naar toe kunnen bij een onveilige situatie. Praat met je leidinggevende of schakel de deskundige hulp in van de vertrouwenspersoon, bedrijfsarts of ombudsman (bij een conflict). Alle informatie is verzamelt op Infopunt veiligheid (fontys.nl)
Hoe te handelen in de rol als studentcoach/docent als er een onveilige situatie zich voordoet?

Fontys signs manifesto sexual violence Amnesty International: Feeling safe is a fundamental right for students and employees of Fontys University of Applied Sciences
On Thursday, January 27, the chairman of the Fontys Executive Board, Joep Houterman signed the manifesto against sexual violence drawn up by Amnesty International on behalf of Fontys. Steffie de Wit, a representative for the Eindhoven region and also a Social Work student at Fontys, signed on behalf of Amnesty International. Social security is a theme that is more topical than ever, demands our attention and has been on the Fontys agenda for some time.
Feeling safe is a fundamental right for both students and employees of Fontys. As a university of applied sciences, it is up to us to create a safe learning environment. Only in such a climate can the talents of our students and staff reach their full potential. By signing this agreement, Fontys commits itself to combat sexual violence and make it open for discussion among students and staff members. Amnesty campaigns to ensure that it is the norm in the Netherlands that sex is based on equality, voluntariness and consent. Recent national research conducted by Amnesty shows that 1 in 10 students have also experienced some form of transgressive sexual behaviour.
The safety of our students and employees is enhanced when they have confidence in the people they can reach out to and share their personal experiences with. These are student coaches, teachers, other staff in the program, the confidant, or second-line counsellors. In the coming months, the theme will receive extra attention to ensure more awareness of these issues, recognizing signals, and referring students if necessary.
Social safety
Coordinator of Team Confidential Advisors, José Schardijn briefly discussed Fontys' approach at the signing. ‘All students and employees at Fontys are entitled to a safe place to study and work, where we treat each other with respect. Unfortunately, it can happen that situations occur which are experienced as unsafe. This may concern undesirable behaviour that is related to sexual intimidation or violence, bullying, exclusion or discrimination. It is important that these experiences and situations are responded to quickly and adequately.'
José Schardijn explains how team Confidential Advisors helps institutes and services to strengthen a safe study and workplace within Fontys and create awareness. They do this by, among other things:
- Providing information about what undesirable behaviour is, how it can occur and how to deal with it.
- Supporting and offering tools for the student coach in dealing with students who are confronted with unsafe situations.
- In addition, the confidential counsellors are there for individual students and employees of Fontys.
It is important that we discuss experiences together and share them within Fontys, so that everyone becomes more aware and starts talking about these sensitive themes. In short: social safety is something that belongs to all of us: students and employees!
