Why IIPD?
Contacts with industrial companies pointed out a lack of educational
training in the basics of Product Development. Many industrial partners reported that young engineers from universities of technology were skilled in analysis and calculations but needed more of synthesis and communications training in parallel. Efficiency in the process of product development has been highlighted in industry, indicating need for changes in companies to stay competitive, such as reducing lead-time and developing learning organizations. That is why we started the multidisciplinary course IIPD in which students of different educational backgrounds work together in a company project.
Engineers face the era of globalization where projects are planned, implemented and have impacts beyond national and cultural boundaries. With the latest communication possibilities, International Integrated Product Development (IIPD) teams are comprised of participants who are located in geographically dispersed areas of the globe. With this IIPD - Collaborative Engineering (IPD-CE) project we balance the need to create an environment that encourages student innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit with the realities of today’s global engineering, business and design.
It is our philosophy that, by raising the awareness of time, quality and cost control, students will learn to improve on competitiveness with IIPD. It is our belief that in this way we educate interdisciplinary oriented and easy-communicating designers, who are eager to transform their 'technical products of mind' into competitive commercial products. All in an international setting.
