Study information

The minor programme ‘Communication’ is organized by Fontys University of Applied Sciences, School  of Communications in Eindhoven. Courses start every February (if there are at least 15 participants). Lessons are in English. This minor programme is concentrated in one semester (30 ECs).

 

Facilities

The Fontys Campus at Rachelsmolen in Eindhoven houses several institutes: communications, economics and business studies, ICT studies, and technology The campus offers ICT-facilities to students during weekdays from 8.30h until 21.00h. Here you can find: two students canteens, a library with ample Internet access, a language training centre.

The campus is in the centre of Eindhoven and not far from Eindhoven Central Station.

Fees

Fontys University cooperates with several schools abroad in the field of knowledge exchange. For students from these institutes it is possible to participate in this minor without extra costs. Costs for books, study-assignments, travelling, housing and living are at the expense of the student. Students have to make their own enquiries whether they are eligible for a grant or scholarship.

Studying in Eindhoven

Eindhoven is a dynamic, modern city in the south eastern part of The Netherlands. There is a very vivid cultural climate and a great variety in places of entertainment. You are not the only student in Eindhoven! Apart from Fontys University of Applied Sciences Eindhoven is home to the Technical University of Eindhoven (Tue) and the Design Academy: all together about 25.000 students.

 

Accommodation

Due to the limited availability of accommodation in Eindhoven, students often have difficulty finding suitable accommodation. Fontys University of Applied Sciences does not have its own accommodation, but Fontys International Office can mediate in finding you a room. To be eligible for this you have to meet several conditions. Culture

Eindhoven boasts a number of cultural institutions that offer their own programmes of music, drama, ballet and exhibitions. Some local venues are

  • Muziekcentrum Frits Philips (programme featuring every kind of music)
  • Parktheater ( varied programmes of drama, ballet, musicals)
  • Plaza Futura ( small scale theatre productions and arthouse cinema)
  • Effenaar ( popconcerts, drama, film)
  • Van Abbemuseum( museum for modern art)

Entertainment

Eindhoven offers numerous opportunities to unwind ! There are cinemas showing the lastest films : Pathe and Eurocinema.

Wining and dining: You can find lots of cafes and restaurants at  Stratumseind and , Wilhelminaplein.

During the year (especially the summer season) there are almost weekly festivals and events for free: Carnival, Fiesta del Sol, Jazz in Lighttown, Music in the Park etc.

 

Shopping

Eindhoven has two major shopping malls where you can find a broad variety of shops.

There are several neighbourhood shopping centres. Some of them offer small shops for international cooking (Turkish, Moroccan, Indonesian, Chinese, Polish).

For somebody who is looking for second hand furniture there are well assorted shops.

 

Health care

Health care in the Netherlands is of high standard. It is necessary to have good international health insurance.

 

Transportation

Eindhoven has its own regional airport (Eindhoven Airport) with links to several European cities. Low cost airlines offer frequent flights to London, Pisa, Budapest and so on.

Eurolines (offering bus connections with many cities in Europe) has an office here.

There are excellent train connections with all major Dutch cities and towns. (1,5 hour to Amsterdam). Visiting other major European cities such as Brussels, Paris and London are within easy reach. There is sufficient local transportation (bus), but it is cheaper, healthier and often faster to ride a  bike, as millions of Dutch do!

Costs of living

The average income in The Netherlands is relatively high. Costs of living in The Netherlands are therefore higher than average in Middle and Eastern Europe. Public transportation, visiting theatres and museums, drinking and dining outdoors is more expensive.

Food and other necessaries of life are reasonably priced.

 

Religion

Eindhoven has a multicultural population. About 30% of the inhabitants has a different national or ethnic background. The Netherlands are predominantly Christian (Roman Catholic and Protestant), though many Dutch are not actively practising. Besides Christian churches of varying signature there are mosques and several meeting centres for almost every denomination.
